The best off roading I have done was in Colorado. The trails are made for the Jeep, and mainly of rock, no brush to get scratches and the views are second to none. Even though I am in the country we have no real trails. But I am like you, I paid too much for my Jeep and want to keep it perfect! The picture below is from near Silverton in a rental Jeep.

I do love Colorado.

I've been resisting the urge to swap out tires and wheels because these K02's at 51 pounds are so damn smooth and capable. Still, the bug does call. Here are a few wheels and tires I'm looking at.

  • AEV Borah Bronze 17" x 8.5" Beadlock Capable Wheel (38 lbs)
  • Mopar Jeep Wrangler Performance Wheel 17" x 8" Beadlock Capable Wheel P/N 77072466AB (34lbs)
  • Method 701 Wheels 17x8.5 4.75 backspacing 0 offset load rating 2650lbs (??lbs)
  • Mammoth Boulder Black Wheels 17x9 4.7 backspacing -6mm offset load rating 1521lbs (23lbs)
  • Quadratec Rubicon Xtreme 17x9 4.75 backspacing -6.35mm offset load rating 2100lbs (29lbs)
  • BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 Tires - LT315/70R17 113/110S C Ford (65 lbs)
  • BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 Tires - LT315/70R17 121/118S E (65 lbs)
  • Discoverer STT PRO - LT315/70R17 121/118Q E (66 lbs)
  • BFGoodrich MUD-TERRAIN T/A KM3 Tires - LT315/70R17 121Q E (74 lbs)

Currently I'm thinking that the Method 701 with SST Pro is the way to go. :headbang:

Gary, I just had 315 STT's installed yesterday and I was honestly a little nervous about all of the talk of load range E tires being teeth chattering. Well, so far I'm totally pleased with them....even going as far as to say that other than the increased noise, I really can't tell much difference. My wife can be critical (in a good way) about these type of changes and she was also pleased with them. I'm currently at 34psi and may or may not play around with the pressure more. Overall, the ride is fine, the noise is acceptable, and the added weight is only slightly noticeable.

You can, Lydia. But remember Vida and you have a long life together, and you don’t need to rush if you don’t see what you want.
G’morning Cristina!:)
I think I have the wheels picked out that we’d be happy with. I think. :giggle: As I thought more about it this morning, I might just keep waiting & saving! Plus, Christmas & my birthday are only a few months away!! ;)

Thank you for the confirmation. I've heard a lot of good things about the STT's. Any flexing issues? Rock toss reduced?

And of coarse, where are the pictures? They've been on for a whole day already!

LOL, I'll get a few pics up later today for you. :like:

As far as the rock chucking, I made a point of heading down a gravel road yesterday evening just to test them out. MUCH MUCH better, as they threw maybe a quarter of what the KO2's did. I didn't get a chance to really test out anything else but at some point I will add the 1.5" Teraflex spacer lift just to gain back the clearance I had before.

My biggest fear isn't tire size or weight. It's dropping off a ledge or rock and having my tire catch it on the way down, that would be devastating for the gate. I ran a trailer hitch as a scorpion tail on the Rubicon to prevent just that from happening.
But that could happen with the OEM 33's. I agree with the thought of the scorpion tail 100%

Yep... Spent all last night cleaning up my side of the garage so that I could fit both the JL and my Harley FLHPI on that side while not affecting my wife's car. I had an extension ladder and 2-man kayak suspended from the ceiling on that side since I didn't need that much vertical room for the Harley and my workbench, but that wouldn't quite work with the JL, so I had to raise them a few inches. If I had pulled in nose first, I wouldn't have had to do that, but that would have made it more difficult to get out of the vehicle since I'm parking on the left and my wife is parking on the right. It's a tight fit, but it worked. Wish I could expand my garage, but I live in one of the damn HOA Nazi subdivisions and as far as they are concerned, it doesn't matter if a 3 (or more) car garage was an option from the builder when the house was constructed. All that matters is what it was originally constructed as since that is what you are going to be stuck with forever. Doesn't matter if your neighbor has a 3-car garage and you have a larger side yard, so you have plenty of room for even a *4*-car garage. It wasn't built that way, so the damn HOA Nazis will not allow you to change it. I hate these scum-sucking low-life HOA Nazis.

John, while I agree with you 100%, why would you piss away $50 on a handheld when for another $50 you could have the real deal. Quadratec has an antenna mount for $18 that mounts on the spare tire carrier. Christina & TJ, before you take the easy way out, think long term.

A $50 entry fee to start off in a hobby you're not certain to do a bunch of or not is sometimes an easier pill to swallow at the beginning, let them come in easy till they just empty every pocket lol plus its handy for spotting.

And you can hand the handheld off to a buddy that doesn't have a radio later.

I was looking at new wheels, but with back apacing, offset and all I am totally lost. So for now I will just put the new tires on the stock rims untill I figure things out. Seems a lot of people are doing that with no reported problems.

Well no tire installation today. The machine is down and will be fixed on Tuesday so I will have to wait. The 315's are noticeably bigger than the 285's for sure!
