If delivery takes the promised 6-8 weeks, which is exactly what we saw for the first 4-doors, that would put the delivery of the first produced 2-doors in the beginning to middle of June. And this would be just the first run of 2-doors, there's a backlog of 5-6 months worth of orders that have to be scheduled for build on a SINGLE production line

As I say there, the delay is most likely the result of risk management. This is particularly the case if the rumours are true that 2.0l engine production and 2dr production will start at the same time. There is only one assembly line for JL’s so any quality issue due to new products puts the entire production at risk. Better to wait and ensure that all quality issues have been dealt with and manage both these risks at once, rather than have two separate introductions with two points of impact to production.[/QUOTE]

Warc1.....I agree Jeep is trying to manage the risk introducing 2.0l & 2door simultaneously. Can this single JL line switch quickly to V6/penastar-8spd. if problems crop up? Has Jeep built & shipped any JLU/ 2.0l combos to the consumer yet? Some of the test mules? Just curious, as I kill time waiting....Day 100 since order.

There was a post in February from a Toledo Jeep employee that was subsequently deleted. It said that 2dr pilot vehicles were being intermittently sent down the line at that time to do quality checks in advance of production. I have no doubt that's being done for 2.0L models as well. Pilot vehicles are not customer vehicles so none should be sold.

I don't expect the initial 2dr production will be solely 2.0L vehicles, just like I don't expect the JL assembly line to switch entirely to 2drs when they are introduced. The rumour, and it's only that, is 2.0L will be a priority at 2dr startup, meaning they'll make up a higher percentage of initial builds than normal. Once FCA is confident there are no production issues, the percentage of 2.0L 2dr orders on the line should drop to match its lower demand.

If they are built in April, where are they until June?
Jeep has said that initial priority for 2drs will be sold orders over dealer orders, so a June date to begin seeing 2drs on lots seems right. Regardless, even if you are lucky enough to have a sold order built the first week of production, I doubt you will see it before mid May.

My experience has been that new models are held at the factory for at least two weeks after initial production and sometimes much longer. This is to confirm that no systematic problems exist that, if found, would otherwise require tracking down vehicles across the country. Add shipping time to this and you can be well into May before delivery.

I am waiting and sticking this out for my 2018 2DR Rubi MT PST. In the end, it will be worth it.

HOWEVER, like many of you and I am getting depressed - specifically, as I ordered on 1/26, I signed my daughter (17 and HS Senior) up for the May 17-18 Jeep Jamboree in Palo Duro Canyon, Texas. Now, with all the delays and probably more delays it seems we will miss this memory making opportunity with my Wrangler loving daughter! A real, serious downer.

I agree that it's not about profit margin on 2 doors vs 4 doors. It's about the production time cost of converting the assembly line to run 2 doors.
That cost is fixed no matter when they do it.

Robots have to be reconfigured and bugs have to be worked out.
That's already been done as they've been running pilot 2drs down the production line for some time according to a Jeep employee.

There is a big cost to that and an ideal time in the demand-production-profit equation to do it.
There's no evidence that FCA has been waiting because the ideal production time has yet to arrive. FCA has been trying to introduce 2dr production for some time now but has been thwarted by quality issues. FCA moved a number of 2dr orders into D1 status the second week of February and assigned late February estimated ship dates. I know, I was one of them. This was abruptly cancelled within a week. There were later, unscuccesful attempts to start up in March reported by FCA. That doesn't speak to ideal time planning, but rather unexpected production issues for which FCA is taking the time to work out and manage their risk.

The cost is not fixed no matter when they do it. It will be cheaper after dealers begin holding 4 door stock than while every 4 door sells as soon as it arrives.
If true, that point was reached some time ago because there have been at least two abortive attempts to begin 2dr production in the past 6 weeks.

At any rate, this is all dancing on the head of a pin. We'll get'em when we get'em. I am curious about your build. If you're avatar is representative, the exterior is identical to mine - Bright White Rubicon, black freedom top, black fender flares. I have most options except steel bumpers, towing group and smoker's group. Mine will be an 8sp auto. How about you?

My avatar is it. I did not get smokers group, safety group, upgraded wheels, or auto trans. Mine will be a manual.

I'm chomping at the bit to get it. But the trails in my area are full of snow right now and Work will keep me to busy to do anything else until the end of may.
Me too. I'm in the flat lands of Canada and have to wait until at least May to get to my closest fun trails, which are in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I've also got plans for my annual fall pilgrimage to Colorado.

I'm intrigued by your manual choice because I couldn't make it work for me. For over 30 years, I only owned manuals until I bought a 2010 JKR. A tour on Colorado's Black Bear Pass the year before was instrumental in changing my mind. It was harrowing watching the driver trying to manage the manual Jeep on a 30% downgrade while making make a five point turn on a switchback. It's risky enough trying to hold the vehicle with your brakes while also having to worry about your foot slipping off of the clutch and jerking you into oblivion. I decided I didn't want that added worry and returned the next year in my JK auto to do the pass without incident. I even made a video of that run here:

It's sad when the one thread they relegate all the 2 Door discussions to passes on to the second page. No new updates or rumors anyone?

Patience, Danielson. The only update we should see between now and 4/9 is, “I went D1!”

If there are additional delays, we won’t hear about them for at least two weeks, I suspect.

How many more updates can we endure? We had Feb. 12th as the start of production, then it was mid March, now it's mid April. I think we are all getting a bit worn out from false hopes!

I heard a rumor that production on 2 door was going to start soon. ;)
You & Fred are making me nostalgic. Reached out to my dealer for first time for an update on February 13, having ordered Dec. 13, 2017. The factory reps reply....”any day now” regarding 2 door start ups. That’s something I tell my 2 year old grandson, stalling him until he finishes his veggies. And patiently we wait as we roll into April, this week, D status 60 Days....
