Has anyone considered a turbo blanket to manage heat on these? Forge motorsport makes one for the Alfas with the 2.0t. I haven’t dug into the specifics of the Giulia setup but it seems engine orientation is the same which means in theory it should work. I think if it fits, it could help cut down on underhood temps therefore helping coolant/oil temps as well. But I could be wrong lol

Wrapping the downpipe in my Subaru helped my manifold temps and IAT’s drastically….thats very easy to do…

I was always unsure about turbo blankets…im more of the heat shield type of guy..:.very surprised a company did not come out with Piece of sheet metal with insulation on it to put around the turbo and protect the coolant tank, etc.

Same here. I figured since it was so well known how hot these run that someone would’ve released something. When I get some extra F around money I’ll probably pick up one of these forge blankets and give it a go

keep me posted please…

My 26 Ruby X is built and in the Mopar custom
Shop currently, ETA mid May. I have an OBD2 reader ready to monitor temps for shits n kicks, I wouldn’t mind doing a before and after.

the shop I use for Subaru tuning is good at custom fab, maybe I’ll have them fab up a simple metal heatshield and go from there…if the data shows it works maybe I can convince them to do a pilot run and see if it sells.

im also ripping open the hood scoop to make it functional immediately lol

Will do!

Making the scoops functional is also on my to do list with mine. Although, one being directly above the main fuse box has me a little concerned with water intrusion. Maybe I’ll only “half” open that side up! Haha

Following, share your findings! I too have been pondering of ways to keep the temps under the hood down. I was thinking of wrapping the downpipe to start.

Mm. 5+ years here and this is the first time I've seen turbo blankets mentioned. Color me curious.

Yes, Zach, if you're able to update this thread after finding some Foolin' Around money, please do. ;)

might be better, wrap exhaust using exhaust pipe wrap. And use this blanket with a spacer between it and turbo. Keeping temp in the turbo might result in unintended consequences of extreme heat inside the turbo.

I live in the desert. In the Summer months, at midnight the ambient temperature will still be 100F. Candles in a glass container in the back patio under the shade stay in liquid form from June to August.

In the last 22 years of living here I have not seen a wrangler on the side of the road with the hood up. My coolant, oil or trans temp has never over heated.

Why do some people think they have to do anything to lower temps? Just curious about the why reasons?

I would never put a blanket over a turbo.

A blanket over the turbine side of the turbo would add additional stress to the cooling system and lubricating engine oil that goes through the turbo. Enough heat generated on the turbine side could affect the compressor side. That would be a definite step in the wrong direction straining an already strained intercooler.

why do people buy jeeps, lift them and put them on 37s just to drive to Starbucks and home?

free will lol.

Blankets are used in a lot of applications and we all know the 2.0T runs quite a bit hotter than most small turbo engines out there, especially under load. If it works, then nobody or nothing were harmed in the process. If it doesn’t improve anything then it’s 100 bucks wasted. Less money wasted than some of yall do just to drive on the street

that’s possible but if it was entirely harmful then semis wouldn’t run them all the time. Granted, much different application. But last turbo platform I was heavily involved with a few people ran blankets on their turbos with no ill effects and actually helped heat soak and such. Not saying it’ll work on this platform. But if I have some spare coin one day, I’ll mess around with it

My first thought when seeing the blanket in your OP was that it might or would make heat soak worse, insomuch that it's trapping heat that would otherwise dissipate via natural convection. Thoughts?

I worked on a shit load of large diesels and natural gas engines and only one of them had something covering the turbine housings. It was a 750 hp 5.9 B Cummins obviously heavily modified. The turbines were insulated to keep all the exhaust heat energy to increase boost. By the way, this was for a marine application with no issues with cooling problems.
Also, diesel exhaust is cooler than gasoline. Older diesels didn’t even have coolant plumbed to the center section. On nat gas conversion engines, the exhaust valves and seats have to be upgraded because of higher ex temps. Valve and seat angles would also be modified to reduce recession. Gasoline temperatures are similar.
The last thing I would want for my JL is to increase the heat load on on the turbo and intercooler. If it was a race/performance car, and it’s not, that would be a different story.

the blanket doesn’t create new heat.

the heat stays inside the turbo and exhaust gas will remove the heat.
Lower under hood temps will allow lower intake temp, lower oil and coolant temp.
