Hi all. I’ve had three automatic JK/Us and I drive countless rental vehicles each year. I just purchased my 2019 factory build JLUR three weeks ago. Shortly after leaving the lot, I noticed the brakes felt a little bit sticky and grabby (technical mechanic terms ) at under 20 mph coming to a stop. Shortly later, I realized that the vehicle seems to decelerate even when coasting at that speed without touching the brake pedal. It kind of feels like when cruise control slows you down when you’re a few mph over the designated speed, or like driving with two feet where the left foot is always gently and inconsistently riding the brake. It’s subtle, but it’s constant and I’ve never experienced it with any other Wrangler or rental.

I’ve searched the forums and found nothing. But I don’t even know what terms to search for. I’m hoping my fellow Jeepers can guide me a bit so I don’t sound like a lunatic when I consult with my dealership. This is not a Jeep thing. I’ve been in Jeep things since 2010 (1992 if you count a CJ7 manual). This is a my brand new JLUR thing.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Does it pull like one break is sticking? After driving for a while feel all the rims. If one is really hot or all are hot then you know your breaks are sticking. Good luck.

You might be experiencing the effects of regenerative braking if in fact you have the eTorque system. Which is completely normal.

I ordered the standard Pentastar 3.6 but never actually looked under the hood. Ugh. Wouldn’t that be something?! But assuming they didn’t mess up and. Have the 3.6 Pentastar, additional thoughts?

I don’t believe the Pentastar is equipped with regenerative braking. Assuming your hand brakes aren’t engaged or engaged improperly, I might look for signs that your brake pads might be rubbing on your rotors. After a long drive without using the brakes, get out and touch all the rotors to see if they are hot.

I’ll try the feel the wheels technique, but gut response is yeah it feels like brakes are sticking. Not pulling left or right though. Tracks pretty straight. Just I feel my body leeching forward and back gently as I come to a stop from under that 20mph mark. Case in point, today I took my foot completely off both pedals going 30 mph and came to a stop within 50 yards as though I was riding the brake the whole way. I would’ve figured I’d roll an additional 50-75 feet but didn’t.

Is brakes sticking an issue or an easy fix? I’m great when th any bolt on mod but you talk brakes and suspension, I’m over my head!

Handbrakes aren’t visibly engaged. I’ll engage them and disengage and see if this helps. I’ll also go on a long highway drive and then roll to a stop on the side of the road and touch the rotors to see what’s happening. Thanks!

What you are describing is actually very similar to how my 2.0 behaves when I lift my foot off the pedal and regenerative braking kicks in.

Beings that you are in 4hi I am sure the extra drag from all the spinning gears are causing this. Especially if the front diff doesn’t have many miles on it.

I’m not sure xactly sure what you mean. But my last three JKs were 3.21 and 3.73, and I know the JLUR is 4.XX and Ive never driven that before. Does that mean, give it some time to break in, or is there certainly something wrong. Sorry for the naive responses here!

Yes, got it with 13 miles and now have 1300 miles.

I think your issue is two fold. First could be the steep gearing of the 8 speed auto and 4.10’s. Secondly, it’s possible that you are having the surging idle issue which is extremely noticeable during deceleration at those speeds. There is a TSB that addresses the surging as well as the noisy cooling fan. Have you noticed an abnormally loud engine cooling fan noise while at idle with the AC turned all the way to its coldest and highest fan speed setting?

Thanks for reply. I just looked in the garage to confirm. At least the engine case thing (again a mechanic term you might not know) says 3.6 L so it doesn’t seem they jammed the wrong engine in it. Why would it feel this wa in a 3.6 Pentastar? Thanks for the help and observations so far.

Btw I might have missed this part, but are you driving 4H on pavement?

1300 is very new. The JL has an electric disconnect for the front diff. The only time it turns is in 4hi or 4lo. My ram 3500 all the gears and drive line spin all the time. If no noise is heard put 5000 miles on it and try to use 4 wheel drive as much as possible to break the front gears in. As soon as I leave the pavement I go to 4hi. I never like putting power to cold gears.
