So yesterday I got out of my JLU with it running, ran inside, came back out, put the car in reverse, applied some gas, and nothing. Screen told me to put it in park and change gears again, so I did, still nothing. R just flashed and kept repeating the on-screen message. Turned the car off and back on, still happening.

Then, I noticed that my driver door was not closed all the way. Opened and closed it, back to normal. I thought it was interesting that the error message didn't tell me my door was open and actually gave me incorrect instructions.

seems like a pointless safety feature considering you can take the doors off.

When you take the doors off you have to unplug the doors which will tell the Jeep that the doors are off. I think they have this feature based on people not shutting their Jeep's off with the push button and maybe keeping it in gear when leaving. If memory serves me correctly Jeep had a problem with Grand Cherokees not being in park after they were shut off. I could be wrong here but I do not think it will be a problem once you take the doors off. On a side note- I would hate to be cruising around doorless when the senor that tells the ECU that the doors are off goes out. You will not be moving the car at all if that happens.

I understand that when you take the doors off, features like dome lights and door open indicators are suppressed. It's either by default when you unplug the connectors, or a setting on the IP screen.

It's pointless and stupid on the JL. They did it on the Grand cherokee because the idiot from Star Trek ran over himself by getting out with his GC in gear and it ran him over, killing him. The Grand Cherokee has a ratchet like shifter and it's pretty easy to leave in gear if you aren't used to it. The JL has a normal shifter though so they should pull that out of the TCM's code.

Agree completely but I think Jeep would rather be safe then sued. :)

Happened to me tonight - could not believe it. Same thought - “the doors come off so....wtf”

I have manual crank windows so I can’t see any reason to not unplug these wires.

It’s frustrating when I try and back up to my boat trailer. I usually get out and check how close I am then get back in and reverse/turn to get closer. I do this a couple of times and now I have to get all the way in and close the door each time!

I know. The first minute I received mine I got stuck on my own street and almost got out and pushed it to the side until I finally saw a tiny little symbol of the door open on the dash. I mean at least the message on the screen could of said “door ajar” or something. Embarrassing. Lol

So what would happen if you were driving along at 45mph and opened the door? Would the jeep suddenly throw itself in to park and come to a stop?

I think the programming won't allow that, but I won't be the one to try it out.
