Oh man! If only FCA released this today.... it’d be a PC butthurt shit storm of epic proportion.... and I’d love every minute of it.
Love both of those commercials; having seen neither. Unfortunately, the ”bouncy” commercial would drive all of those snowflakes crazy and the media would have a field day with FCA corporate. If you are ever in Europe, watch TV commercials; they are irreverent and very funny. America needs to lighten up over the small stuff; we still have soldiers dying in war and cops shot on the streets. Time to reprioritize.

Some truth to that; their parents defeated fascism and made the U.S. the preeminent world power. But their kids are the first generation that's worse off than their parents, in terms of debt/job prospects/etc. The Boomers clearly did something wrong.

I don't think Millenials at large are the Tide-pod-eating/safe-space-hiding snowflakes they are portrayed as; I think social media is just doing what it does best and focusing a lens on the worst among them. I've met plenty of morons of every generation, there just wasn't any way for their ineptitude to go viral before. Our current POTUS is a Boomer, and he may be the most thin-skinned snowflake on earth.

Back to the original topic of the death of risque ads; America has always been prudish compared to Europe, dating back 300+ years. There was a bit more than a decade (spanning the late sixties through 1980 or so) where we lightened up, but then a confluence of societal factors pushed us back to being prudes. We just need to learn how to laugh at ourselves again.

More like late 60s through the late 90s early 2000s..... the social movement/s you’re giving credit to this shift can easily be tracked by looking at comedians and their material. It wasn’t until the last 10 to 15 or so years did the material change and get more PC. Which coincidentally aligns with the shift/growth in popularity of social media..... I’d use George Carlin as an example, being the most recognizable social commentary comedian. I’d dare anyone to show this generation his material.... heads would explode. To the point you have people boycotting and protesting comedians now over sensitivities.

I agree, my wife if from the Netherlands, first generation from her family here in the US and we discuss this all the time.... it’s a whole different world there. Oddly enough they are not as addicted to social media as they are here, spend more time outdoors active and engaging with others in person.... what a concept lol (sarcasm) I actually like it there, but it’s odd to see 60-80 year olds still riding bicycles in the streets.... here in the states if you’re that old, odds are you can barely make a flight of stairs. But my point is they socialize and pass on their values this way.

My recollection of the 80s was a decade very much shaped by the Moral Majority casting judgement on anyone and anything that was actually fun, but I grew up in a very socially-conservative city. Women's fashion was very modest in the 80s through the 90s, if you consider that to be a reflection on society's rigidity of the time.

Plenty of contemporary comedians still push boundaries and get away with it; I was surprised at Dave Chappelle's last Netflix special. His hot takes on race/gender were bold to say the least, and there was the predictable backlash, which he ignored. Louis CK has said things that would make Carlin blush, and his eventual downfall was due to the creepy stuff he did, not what he said. Folks always complained about comedians, they just didn't have social media platforms on which to do it.

I think Louis Black would be a better example of a modern social commentator/comedian.... Louis CK not so much. CK was/is more of a shock style as you put it.... which is not what Carlin was. Carlin was great at putting things into context so we could laugh and then reflect on ourselves as a whole. This is what made him a genius in my eyes.

And now for something different.....

This kind of stuff would probably go over better if we didn't have very real and not funny misogyny and patriarchy issues. It's easy for some guy to say lighten up to women who have been the victims of that sort of BS over the years.

Did someone seriously write "patriarchy" on a Jeep forum? Shouldn't this be a banning offense?

I agree. Unfortunately, the funny "innocent" stuff has been overshadowed by legitimate issues, as you note, and we just have great difficulty in our society separating these issues. My wife has been harassed professionally and personally over the years particularly as a woman (physician) in what was a man's world, but she still manages to distinguish the "funny" from the serious. The odd thing in America is that we sell so many products with sex, yet to mention it is forbidden.

But to keep the Jeep theme here, I will say she let's me play with my Jeeps as much as I want and she certainly "gets" the whole Jeep thing. I bought her a little Jeep Renegade for her short commute and tight parking lot and she loves it!

No, but the reality TV entertainer president just tweeted, asking his beloved "poorly educated" followers to learn a new vocabulary word besides "snowflake". ;)
