@Rahneld, this only applies during an ESS event when the batteries are separated, all other times both batteries power everything. You'll have to find some way to prove an initial cold start is an ESS event.

Yes, I appreciate that battery isolation is an instantaneous cold crank (when you push the start button with your foot on the brake) event, or during an ESS event: only for the duration of the braked stop. Thanks.

As to my proof that an initial cold start is an ESS event....it's not per se, but it is an ESS battery event I believe (do you agree?) I say this because I believe that the starter relay is instantaneously in sole dependence during cold crank on the ESS battery to send its message to the starter, just prior to the batteries becoming reconnected in parallel but before the starter kicks in.

As for the process during of an ESS event, more likely measured in seconds, I believe that the same starter relay is solely dependent on the ESS battery for the stop duration, to send that message to the starter when the operator takes their foot off the brake, where after the same re-connection to parallel between the batteries occurs just prior to the starter engaging, as above during a cold crank.

Do I have that correct/do you agree?

Here is the essence of my frustration. Do you agree (not only with the frustration but that what I said hasn't yet been shown wrong.)?

* An ESS event will not occur (for among other reasons e.g. cold engine) when the engine is running, if the ESS battery lacks adequate charge.

* If the ESS battery has sufficient power when the engine is on (and hot, and the ESS "off" button is not pressed, etc.), and the vehicle is at a traffic light:

an ESS event does occurs, and then if the ESS battery loses sufficient charge during the ESS event, say, due to the electric load demands placed (solely) on it while the operator has their foot on the brake at a traffic light, while the engine is off, and the two batteries are isolated......

.....the ESS battery--still capable, and being the only power source capable of signaling the starter relay, despite its lack of power, will "throw a Hail Mary pass" if need be and signal the starter relay (which only gets its power from the ESS battery during the crank process) to tell the starter to crank the engine, so that not only can the main battery come to the rescue (as the batteries are reconnected in parallel after the starter relay signals) but so too now can the alternator (now that the engine is running) come to the rescue of the ESS battery's need for a charge.

* But if you try to start the vehicle by pressing the power button to the right of the steering wheel (American models) and hold your foot on the brake pedal, and the ESS battery lacks the very minimal level of charge that would prevent an ESS event from occurring, rather than designing the system to do Mr. @Jebiruph's very N2<-N1 jumper hack automatically, and tax the main battery to get the starter relay to signal the starter should the ESS battery lack power, and rather than (as is normal operation) reconnect the batteries in parallel, continue to keep the batteries isolated so a dead ESS battery does not become a black hole energy sink that taxes the alternator, or more importantly, the main battery when the JL is parked, off, and at rest--the vehicle simply doesn't start.

Ok, I have to go out and fire up the truck and plow last night's snow... While I'm out plowing, think of a bunch more questions to ask.. :CWL:

I've got a question: Can you trickle charge through the "lighter" port?

Forgive me I missed it. What size fuse did you use in the jumper?
