Just don't let her do this (and I didn't know 2WD was a thing).

:surprised:I I didn't know 2WD option existed either. Do they charge extra for it? Is it on a secret screen at the dealership that only the manager has the password for?

Makes me want to go to the dealer, with this t-shirt, order a fully loaded Rubicon with a lift kit, wrapped in camo, and then ask them to remove the 4x4 option, just to see the confused look

I changed the oil today (First change) Reset the oil life counter and left the info display to oil pressure when I left the Auto Hobby Shop. Normal oil pressure @ 30psi, looks good I say... Then I hit the first traffic light, engine stops, pressure zero; cool. Upon engine restart and I start rolling, the oil pressure rose to 67psi then slowly tapered down to the normal 30psi; yikes!

The only way I could prevent the high pressure spike was to ease off the brake and sit for about 8 sec then go. Try doing that in Comifornia traffic without getting shot at. With the ESS system off (Button) the oil pressure remains at a constant 30psi.

This oil spike can not be good for the oil seals over the long haul. Additionally, would that pressure spike Bypass the oil filter and allow unfiltered oil to circulate for a time? I imagine it would and that also can not be a good thing. Hence no more ESS for me.

I did a search and did not see this referenced in any oil pressure or ESS threads. If this has been addressed, I apologize for wasting your time.
There is no oil psi at any seals. If there was, it would leak oil. The only pressure at the seals would be from poor crankcase ventilation.
IIRC, the oil bypass is about 100psi.
Looks like you already found out how the 2 stage pumps work.

The 4-door Wrangler Unlimited came standard with 2WD from 2007-2010

Possibly; but consider this. Electronic and mechanical components have a designed cyclic rate of failure. From what I've learned about the oil pump in the 3.6, it is a two stage variable vane pump controlled by an electronic relay. Why on earth would I want to subject the components to more wear and tear than is required? That said, you are initiating a high oil pressure demand with each ESS sequence instead of the less frequent oil pressure demands under varying load conditions during normal driving conditions.
Still not the ESS FAULT

Not that I need to respond to this but...

I served twenty years in the Navy, moved all over this great country of ours, seen every state except Montana, Maine and Idaho. My service kept me away from my family more than most, twelve deployments, not counting all the work-ups, inspections, and REFTRA's etc... I made a deal with my wife at the beginning of my service that if she was willing to follow me through my career, then at the end, I would in turn follow her though hers.

Well it's her turn now and she chooses to live here near her family and our grown children. If it were my choice I would have put California in the rear view mirror in 2004 when I retired from the Navy. My wife put up with a hell of a lot of crap during my military service, I guess I can deal with being a California resident if it makes my wife a happier person. I doesn't mean I have to like it.
I hear ya. Thank you for your service sir.

My ESS system has been disabled for more months than I can remember using either a Tazer or currently Smart Stop/Start and trust me ESS has nothing to do with the spike in pressure, mine normally spikes randomly and not sure why but 99.999% of the time it’s running at the 30-31

It’s a two stage oil pump. It will fluctuate. Don’t be worried if it fluctuates, be worried if it doesn’t.
This.

LOL at being terrified of 67 PSI on a dual stage pump that's designed to run at 80 PSI when the ECU tells it to.

heh yall are worried about a little oil pressure. my sbc400 runs at between 60-80 psi consistently. gotta love high flow oil pressure pumps and for that matter two stage's like the jeep has. nothing to worrie about. i notice the jeep does avg about 30 psi until you floor it or are coming down the mount in a lower gear. it will jump up a bit. i dont see it being a problem

Yes 67psi is nothing. Mine Durango with 3.6L will hit 100psi when the engine is cold in winter, and it stays there for a bit. Thats using 0w-20 oil.

The oil pump is in "high psi mode" until the oil temp reaches 166*F. Then it lowers to improve fuel mpg by using less hp to turn the oil pump.
When the rpm hit 3500 rpm, the high psi mode kicks back in. Oil psi will jump from 45ish psi to 80ish psi.

I like ESS. I have a 2008 JKU to which I have manually done this since new. I’ve always done this with my cars. Not as often as ESS does but if I’m going to sit at a light for a while I’ve never seen the point of keeping the engine running.

You're probably not saving anything and in fact it may be costing you more in the long haul.

I remember, 30 or so years ago, riding around with my Grandpa in his old (even then it was old) Chevy. He would turn it off when going down hill to save gas. Who knew he was ahead of his time!
