So what would happen if you were driving along at 45mph and opened the door? Would the jeep suddenly throw itself in to park and come to a stop?

Maybe the bad frame welds would come apart as it came to a screeching halt. See the thread “JL Welding Issues” - this is whats on my mind all the time now.

It will also cause the large Key FOB to explode and your ESS will permanently disable the disable button...

It's pointless and stupid on the JL. They did it on the Grand cherokee because the idiot from Star Trek ran over himself by getting out with his GC in gear and it ran him over, killing him. The Grand Cherokee has a ratchet like shifter and it's pretty easy to leave in gear if you aren't used to it. The JL has a normal shifter though so they should pull that out of the TCM's code.
I understand this is an old post but I wanted to clarify a few things:
-Anton Yelchin was not an idiot (because)
-Fiat Chrysler was in the process of recalling 1.1 million vehicles due to faulty gear shifter (specifically)
-Anton’s vehicle, the 2015 Grand Cherokee had >100 incidents of same occurrence (so)
-The family sued FCA for Wrongful Death in LA Superior Court and was going to win (but)
-Jeep settled to avoid a jury awarding compensatory and punitive damages earlier this year (also)
-FCA lawyers required all parties involved to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements to avoid bad publicity (inferring)
-Anton’s death and resulting legal matter likely contributes to the JLs record high price tag!

Yeah but can't you see that he is slightly inconvenienced and clearly that's more important than another person's life.

When you take the doors off you have to unplug the doors which will tell the Jeep that the doors are off. I think they have this feature based on people not shutting their Jeep's off with the push button and maybe keeping it in gear when leaving. If memory serves me correctly Jeep had a problem with Grand Cherokees not being in park after they were shut off. I could be wrong here but I do not think it will be a problem once you take the doors off. On a side note- I would hate to be cruising around doorless when the senor that tells the ECU that the doors are off goes out. You will not be moving the car at all if that happens.
Is that the « senor » that might go out ?!?! Lol

The back up camera is not wide-angled enough to see a hitch-ball? My Silverado back-up camera is fish-eyed enough to see the ball and any hitch I am backing up to.

Its mounted within the spare tire, and you won't be able to see through the tire to the hitch.

Happened to me tonight - could not believe it. Same thought - “the doors come off so....wtf”

I have manual crank windows so I can’t see any reason to not unplug these wires.
Wait. the JL Sport with crank windows have wires running to the doors? I can see door pin switches on the frame, but why are there wires to the door if no power windows, mirrors or locks?

Are the pin switches mounted in the doors instead of the body for the purpose of removing the doors?

Its probably just an indicator to the vehicle that the doors are attached and nothing more.

I understand this is a old post but wanted to clarify one thing. Anyone who gets run over by their own vehicle is a complete moron. If you are dumb enough to let this happen to yourself and get killed you should consider it a example of natural selection. Hopefully it happens before you have a any children so that your genes of stupidity are not passed on to future generations.

I 100% agree. I've had a Grand Cherokee with the affected shifter since 2014. It is clunky, but you just have to be a darwin award winner to do what he did. The auto park function is just stupid on the JL since it doesn't even have the ratchet shifter like the WK2.
