Another key to engine longevity is to change the oil early; within the first 500 to 1000 miles and the second oil change 1 or 2 thousand miles later. This will get rid of the break-in wear metals as the OEM doesn't break-in the engines. You're going to have wear metals on any new engine. See Lake Speed YouTube video's for the science.

This is the single most important part of "break-in". Most people think babying an engine is required. That's simply not the case. Bearings don't require "break-in". The rings are really the most important component that needs "break-in". In some cases, if you baby it and the rings don't seat before glazing occurs (a normal process of glazing occurs from fuel and oil products getting baked onto the bore), the rings will excessively leak compression and combustion products into the crankcase, and oil consumption will be higher than normal. The crosshatch honing pattern put into the bore during manufacturing is intended to abrade the rings at a specific rate to wear the rings into full contact with the bore, before glazing prevents further wear on the rings. If you miss this window during the break-in period, you don't get a second chance.

The 3000-5000 rpm range is where the maximum torque and cylinder pressure occur. Rings are a dynamic seal and require cylinder pressure to force the ring against the bore. During break-in, high force of the cylinder pressure helps wear in the rings appropriately. Most of the ring wear should occur in the first few hundred miles, before glazing has had a chance to build up on the cylinder walls.
So I need to run RPM up to 3000 periodically in 1st few 100 miles?

Got oil and filter waiting for when I arrive home.

For those who ordered an out of state Jeep and flew in to pick up and drive home; how did you handle the “break in period” as stated in owners manual?
Followed the break in instructions during the 500 mile drive home. As I got closer to the 500, I'd speed up a little bit, varying the speed and did not use the cruise control.

Use the manual mode, for an auto transmission, above say something like 35 mph or higher, select a gear that gets the rpm around 2500, then accelerate at full throttle to 4500-5000 rpm, upshift and repeat. A few cycles like this, then easy driving to cool down, then repeat.

Flew to the next state over for my Dodge Cummins. Saved at least $15k. Traffic dictated the speed variance. I like to do an oil change at first 1k miles to make sure any leftover material is flushed .

I've never heard anyone propose the quick 2nd oil change, but I like it.

It certainly can't hurt. Especially if the concern is manufacturing debris. But then, the filters are pretty good at eliminating stuff.

Cummins, drive it like you stole it, is the best way to break them in, or hook a heavy load to it. I drove my 06 Dodge 2500 W/5.9 Cummins like a rental car, when I first got it. It's still running like a champ.

My brother is considering flying from CA to TX for a 3/4 ton pickup. He's going to have to deal with a 1500 mile return trip.

And here I thought this thread would give good advice on how to rid the Jeep from a fly that got into the vehicle and is buzzing around against the windshield or back glass.

helpful thread, I will be heading over to MD soon and drive back to ATL, avoiding interstate at all cost.

I also plan on changing the diff fluids at about 1k mark. not sure why no one talks much about it, unless you regear and then you have to get a 500-mile diff fluid change.

I am probably missing something in the logic.
