Mods, please, it is not politics.

"Bad times create tough men, tough men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create bad times."
Good times in late 90's and early 2000's created some stupid humans, unless some of them had badass parents who whooped their asses when they were growing up.
Guys, kids these days lack street smartness, they are too much spoiled. We need to do something about it and do it fast. Don't give them their high school degree until they serve in the military for two years where military officers kick their butts. Israel does that and their young men and women are tough as nails. They leave home as boys and girls and after two years return as tough men and women. A short cut that works. Call it some kind of project after high school, name is not important.

Heard the same thing from my grandparents, and I’m over 60 now. Let’s not lose perspective. There will always be the opinion of the older generation that the younger generation is a bunch of undisciplined slackers. I don’t know if it’s true, but I’ve certainly seen my fair share of generational bias. Just one old guys thoughts.

It is not about discipline, it's about the lack of ruthlessness. If a horse makes friendship with grass, what is he going to eat? If a lion makes friendship with a zebra, what is he going to eat? There are some people out there that we have to eat, not make friendship with. Those people will eat us if they get the opportunity. We have to teach these kids about that. Also, to beat the wicked, you'll have to think wicked.

Well I absolutely support your last statement about teaching, I’ll add mentoring and guiding in there as well. It’s unfortunate that the the world is so ruthless. I hope that we could teach our youth how to be successful without a dog eat dog mentality, but at the same time be wary that everybody wants to take our lunch money, our dinner and our life.

Miltary service teaches that sometimes you have to kill other humans, it is MMA on steriods. In MMA you just physically beat humans and make them bleed, in Military you completely waste humans. Ruthlessness is very important in humans when the time comes and it is required. Military service makes you a better all round person. If we lived in John Lennon's Imagine, then things would be fine, but we don't. We live in a ruthless world. Military people are the toughest. And that toughness is true toughness, I yet have to meet a veteran who is an asshole.

Have you already given up two years of your life in the line of fire like you're suggesting should be required of every man and woman?
I signed up for Selective Service when I came here. So I would have been called for service if required. I will give 2 years of my life for military if they call me. And they will feed me, it is not like I will be jobless. The 18 year olds should be paid 60k a year when they go out for two years. I am not saying they should be enslaved. They are made tough and paid too, what a deal. They will shoot guns, ride on tanks, serve on aircraft carriers, work out like crazy, it will be an experience. It will be a great investment, all citizens receiving basic training and ready to go. And you know what, some of the kids will choose to stay with the Military after two years. Can you imagine what wonders this will do to the physical and mental well being of our young population. Instead of spending time on crap, they will spend time with the Military.

Imagine your 20 year old returning home with his degree and in a military uniform, just imagine that, that's badass. You will feel great that your child has grown up. And the government should let them keep their uniform and handgun as a gesture of appreciation

Why are you assuming they don't come back in a coffin? Or body parts missing? Or spending the rest of their lives living with post-traumatic stress disorder? It's not all glamour.

Returning in coffins is part of life. I wouldn't fully deploy them in a warzone without their consent though. We can always come up with a system that can work for all parties.

You know I'm saying all this with a lot of emotions, because I come from a country where 70,000 militants took over a nation of 40 million people, because the rest of us were not ruthless or as ruthless. What should have happened instead in a nation of 40 million people is that the skulls of those 70,000 animals should have been put on display in a museum in Kabul.

A military force that can simply decline to go into combat? It's funny you think that's an option.

Would you opt out of deployment as a solider if you were given the choice? Honestly, you wouldn't. The vast majority wouldn't. You would wish the war didn't happen or the war ended soon, but you wouldn't run away. Obviously if some of them start crying like girls, send them home. Just make sure your daughter with solid military seevice doesn't marry that sissy, check his military service report that says "Cried himself out of deployment" 😁

Do you really think that the majority of teenagers that are forced to serve by their government will voluntarily go to war if given the option to stay at home in a cushy job?

First, two years of military service doesn't turn you into a Navy SEAL that is supposed to be parachuted behind enemy lines and expected to annihilate the enemy. Or a bomber pilot going on a bombing mission. We have a full professional Army for all that. The idea is to show the youngsters some war. Israel does it and their youngers are doing fine. And good luck messing around with and trying to take over Israel. You will have to kill every single Israeli to be able to take over, they will not simply go down without a fight
You can't obviously expect them to be professional soldiers. There are millions of teenagers, it is not even practical to send all of them to warzones. If some do get deployed, can they not just fill cartridges, load the artillary, put fuel in the tanks and helicopters and lend some hand to the professional soldiers?
