2021 JLUR with growing crack in the windshield. The current windshield is OEM (Safelite looked at repairing the crack and couldn’t since it went all the way to the edge, he pointed out it was not OEM). My insurance does not cover windshields. The quote from Safelite for their glass is approximately $400. Should I spend the extra $$ on the OEM glass - which they have not quoted yet - or will I be ok with their glass? I do not plan on going to the Gorilla Glass, it does not seem worth it.
Thanks!
Dave
I ask my self the same question.
Then My wife pointed out. Its going to get broken again so why pay the extra cost.

Btw> side note. Because Florida allows glass replacement under comprehensive, free
I didn't understand the insurance companies used those claims against me
Progressive wont insure me. So much for Flo....
Yup, You think "awesome, no deductible!" Then they jack your rates because you've had 3 recent comprehensive claims, all windshields....

So there is a company that makes a plastic overlay that is supposed to stop jeep windshield cracks. Needs two people to lay it on. I have not tried it but I like the concept. On an obvious note I just make sure that I leave a lot of distance between me and trucks carrying debris down the highway at high speeds. Seems to have help as I am only on my second windshield from Safelite.

It's not Safelite's glass - aftermarket or OE - that's the issue. It's their install that can really suck. We've had all kinds of problems with them not getting the windshield to seal all the way around in Jeeps.

A while back we started using a locally owned glass shop and they do great work, no issues with their installs. I might recommend checking one out in your area if you haven't already...

8 months in on a new jeep and this happened last Sunday. I was on the freeway early morn with no traffic and a small rock hit the windshield. Later in the day, it went from a small crack to this. Safe lite is coming tomorrow to repair/replace. I’m glad I got the windshield insurance but wouldn’t have known about it until I started following this forum. By the picture you can see how well gorilla glass works...not at all!

I've used the permatex repair kits that are around $12 on Amazon with great success. If you get to those little stars early they'll nearly disappear. Another trick i found, if the crack does spread, even to the edge, but hasnt run across the entire glass yet, still use the kit on the impact point but put the leftover resin filler it comes with into the crack especially at the furthest end and it won't spread any further. I've saved 2 windshields with cracks 4 to 6 inches that way. One was on my truck in the black part where the rear view mirror is and i stopped it from traveling down even though it ran to the top edge. The other was on the Jeep and was on the far passenger side. Started to travel before i could repair it, but the trick worked and it hasn't moved any further in months.

You gotta follow the instructions though, don't do it in direct sun, and tap the underside a bunch of times during the first step. Some videos on YouTube to show how to repair them the best, but real easy and saves you big time if not insured.

Be careful if the insurance claims, though they don't charge your a deductible, insurance agents says they can go against you as a claim... but not all companies ding you

im on my second gorilla glass in 12k and its already cracked. whats more its cracking fast - almost all the way across the windshield. same thing happened last time too. by fast im talking 2 days.

Ive come to learn that "gorilla glass" is a marketing term - it means your windshield will crack to distract you from the chips so you dont think your windshield gets any chips. pretty clever but im onto them and spreading the word.

Rocks and windshields are such an issue in AZ that state law says you can have three windshield replacements in a year before insurance can ding you. This is also why I've had zero $ deductible glass coverage for twenty years. Every car I've owned in AZ has gone through windshields not only my Wrangler.

Safelite has been good here. I have their mobile service come out and do the replacment work.

What law is that? Send me the statute if you find such a thing.

20-263. Vehicle insurance; prohibited act by insurer; hearing; penalty

A. No insurer shall increase the motor vehicle insurance premium of an insured as a result of an accident not caused or significantly contributed to by the actions of the insured. Any insurer which increases the premium as a result of accident involvement shall notify the insured of the reason for such increase.

B. The director, after a hearing, shall order an insurer that has raised the premium of an insured in violation of subsection A to refund the amount attributable to such premium increase and shall impose a civil penalty not to exceed three hundred dollars. In determining whether an insurer has violated subsection A, the director may conduct such investigation as he deems necessary and the costs shall be paid by the insurer pursuant to section 20-159.

I found this in relation to accidents...i suppose it could fit but didn't mention anything about 3 glass claims

F*CK safelite, I would avoid them at all costs. You will pay more hands down. Call a local mom and pop glass shop and save hundreds (I've got multiple first hand experience with this). If you have the Alpine system then you have an acoustic glass windshield and should replace it with that. Mom and pops can get the same thing safelite and won't rape you in the process.

Side note, don't let your insurance companies trick you into the chip repair for "free" scam. It's not free, it will hang on your record for 3 years as a claim, albeit a cheap small claim it's still a claim and if enough of those little claims pp up it can jack with your rates.

I bought that overlay, paid a tint guy to apply professionally OVER the Gorilla glass, still cracked. Cost to me was approximately $200 and useless

They are considered "no-fault" claims which do not count towards premiums as individual incidents. I used to work in the repair industry and still know several insurance agents. and adjustors.
