I'll be quick. Dealer within last 1k miles replaced the right rear backing plate. Needed to pull the axle, but factory doesn't seem to require popping off the diff cover for C-clips.

Question: Does oil come out the tube when pulling the axle?

Because after all the work of putting all the brakes back to factory new, I drained/refilled the rear diff and is was BLACK and the magnetic plug was covered in a half-inch of particles. (Bought it certified at 72k miles. Now has 80k miles.). If they pulled the axle, they didn't drain the oil?

So...had me wondering, I raised all 4 wheels off the ground for the first time and checked the factory LSD. NO proof of function at all. Wheels spin opposite each other. Frictionless. Great.

I have 1 year and 45k miles left on the extended warranty. So here's the next question:

Question: Do I suffer the dealer yanking all my brake work apart to do a shiot job putting in a new shiot Mopar LSD under $100 dollar ext warranty? *OR* Pay great cash for a great shop to put in a great LSD? Costs/ideas please. She's a grocery-getter, a soft-roader and spends 4 months in a snow belt on 33's.

I value your opinions.

Please don't ask me. My experience with Stelantis 'Stealerships' have been nothing but the worst. I'd gladly rather have a tooth pulled without meds.

Spend your money at a compitent shop. I've given up on all of my extended Mopar warranty. Just for reference...

Good luck,
Jay

  • There are no C-Clips. They can pull the axle without taking the cover off very easily.
  • Oil doesn't come out if you raise the side the axle shaft is coming out of higher than the diff. A slight angle will work just fine for no oil to come out.
  • Yes, let them replace the LSD under warranty.
  • The plug being covered in material is completely normal and not a sign of anything going wrong. It's doing its job.

Firstly the LSD works like a normal open diff so what you experienced is normal. There is no friction from the clutch packs until you are in no traction situation that forces the clutch packs to tighten up. You can’t safely replicate that when the vehicle is on a lift .
Yes, axles can be pulled without removing the diff cover and as stated it can be done without oil leaking out.
Generally there is more wear material and dirtier oil in a LSD because of the clutch packs.

For some reason, I thought that you were an engineer from the Factory. Or am I once again wrong..LOL

If your LSD is truly bad, then replace it with a TrueTrac. It's a better design, will function better, and will last much longer.

Thank you all. I understand everything so far. But the 1 thing above throws me off in that the general rule-of-thumb was the old rotation test I did.

Is the Mopar Anti-Slip that different? Is my only test left the old "dirt road test" and see how many tracks I lay down? How to test function of the oem LSD?

Found: Summit Racing: Detroit TrueTrac $800 and Master Install Kit +$300 = $1100. Probably double installed about right?

All LSDs work the same. they require one tire the slip in order for the clutches to lock up and engage, otherwise they act as an open diff. When on the lift the tire rotation test is the same as an open diff.
A locked selectable locker, a full time locker or spool are the only ones that both tires will rotate the same way on a lift.
If your LSD must be replaced I HIGHLY recommend the gear driven TruTrac LSD rather then another clutch based LSD.

Bill, you are not wrong. However that was a half a career ago. The time I spent designing software / firmware for Chysler Engine Controllers was a blast and a really phenomenal gig. Enjoyed it immensely. Really was hard to leave it.

However, on several of the high altitude emission calibration trips that I was assigned, I just fell in love with Colorado. So when the Daimler merger happened, management came out and said at the time, that the plan of record was to move all powertrain engineering to Germany. Take that as you will.

So I floated my resume around the greater Denver area. Landed in Boulder, but no longer working for the automotive industry. However, I'm still designing and writing software but for a different technology sector.

Truthfully, as much as I truly loved working around powertrain development, I couldn't be any happier than where I now live. Any day Jeeping above tree-line is about the best day I can think of. John Denver had only hinted about the Rocky Mountain experience, which I now affectionately call my backyard.

Cheers,
Jay

Assuming your jeep is a late model you should have the TruTrack LSD. Trutrack is a helical design, not a clutch design. The difference is helical and will act like an open differential when there is zero resistance to both sides. Ie. jacking it up and turning one tire will result in the other tire rotating in the reverse direction. This is a non-preload LSD. A clutch differential is preloaded and will give you the result that you expected. There are a few You Tube videos that will give you some technics you will need to know when your out wheeling and manage to get one tire off the ground.

Are you saying that Jeep changed from the Trac-Lok to a TrueTrac?

Going by the to DANA/Eton spec sheet the Trac-loc is not available for the M220 or M186 rearend that is in my 2019 JL. So I’m assuming. that jeep is putting what is available, which is the DANA/Eaton truetrac.
