Yes, the powered sliding top is the powered soft top.
Per the "leaked" JL order codes list, the power top is a soft top. Thus the "ST" prefix on the code.

ROOF/TOP OPTIONS:

  • HT1 – Black 3-Piece Hard Top
  • HT3 – Body Color 3-Piece Hard Top
  • ST2 – Premium Black Sunrider Soft Top
  • ST3 – Premium Tan Sunrider Soft Top
  • STB – Premium Black Soft Top (No Description Available)
  • STC – Premium Tan Soft Top (No Description Available)
  • STJ – Black Power Soft Top

I'm still puzzled why Jeep would sell the JL at first without a softop. They obviously exist in the owners manual.
It is either a ruse...or very poor planning!

They'll only make it for basically 1 month before adding the dual top option. Besides, it is the fall. By winter, they'll be in production, so demand will be greater for hard tops, anyway. You can always add the soft top later, too.

I agree. It must be a design they can't stock right away.

From what I've gathered, the power top is a SLIDING SOFT top, as in the rest of the top is hard, only the roof portion is fabric. Just like the Jeep Liberty

I sure hope they will come out with a Willys Edition right out of the gate. I love mine. And will be first in line for a new one.

I have kind of given up on the power soft top. It is either an elaborate hoax or (more likely) will come at a premium I am not willing to pay.

The only consolation for me is my last jeep was a YJ. The top had so many snaps and zippers getting the top down reminded me of my awkward attempts to undress my first girlfriend. The JL has to be better than that.
But not as much fun.....

Is purchasing the dual top any cheaper than ordering just hard top then purchasing the soft top later from jeep? Because I don't think I want to wait a month just to get the dual tops I like to order early as possible

I don't know about now, but when I bought my 08 JK, it was a small advantage to buy the dual top group over buying them separately. However, even if it is still that way, one's financial situation could make a delay on the soft top a financial advantage, especially if you wouldn't be buying it until 6 months later. Btw, Bestop said they won't offer their own soft tops in the aftermarket for 6 months, as per contractual agreement with Jeep. (They supply the OEM soft top.) Another advantage to waiting is that they will be able to offer some different variants than the factory top.

I ordered the dual tops because I really like the new soft top, from what I've seen in pics. In fact, I almost went soft top only. I just really like the hard top in the winter, although I have run my JK soft top through a couple of very cold winters and it did just fine.

I got some guidance on timing of key items at today's reveal. We nailed the 2-door availability. Good news power sliding top appears to have been moved forward slightly.
  • 2-door production begins mid-February.
  • 4-door JLU will arrive at dealerships in January
  • Half doors will be available 2019.
  • Power sliding top will be available early 2018.

2019 Model Year or sometime in the year 2019 ?
Not specified but I will say 2019MY. Last I saw, Job 1 for half doors was Nov. 28, 2018. My guess is Rubicon comes then, followed by half doors for the rest of the lineup in early 2019 calendar year.
