I have used Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra Platinum for years. You saying its not performing as it should gives me pause on if I should to continue to use it.
I haven't looked into too much myself but Penzoil has never been looked upon kindly in Jeep Forums (and I imagine elsewhere). Even over on XJ Forums guys would dog on it over there and that's on a forum dealing with, at the youngest 23 year old vehicles, with an engine design that's largely unchanged since the mid 60s. So I just listened, blindly lol.

I change the JLU's oil every ~5K miles, using Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge full syn oils. A sample is sent to Blackstone, every time, for their analysis. The report cards that they provide continue to illustrate good grades. That, paired with my own observation that the Jeep's engine continues to sound and run well, is sufficient for me.

I have in fact walked away from using Pennzoil Platinum, due to recurrent viscosity loss as determined by the lab's testing protocols.
Also I do the same! Ever since the head crack on my XJ I used their UOA's to monitor it's progress after the replacement. Done the same for the JL since I got it.

I want to say I started using it back when I had my '97 Z28. If memory serves, those guys suggested it. That was around 2008. Been using it ever since. Granted, if its going to cause issues because it isnt doing its job, Ill change. I have only had one UOA since I got the Jeep. Doesnt mention the viscosity being bad though.

I think OP is just trying to turn this into another thread about what oil is best 😂

The UOA data was initially borderline for Pennzoil Platinum, after which two reports in a row illustrated viscosity loss of a degree that got the attention of the lab tech who prepared the reports. That was enough for me, doubly so since the collateral data for Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge was that much better.

Just one owner's experience, for context. :)

I watched the ProjectFarm tests on various oils and the regular platinum variant lacked performance. The ultra platinum was a top performer though and is what I’ve used for the last 7 years. You can’t go wrong.

No I am not. Lol I just found it interesting. How they are selling this dream oil to consumers. When I had my Challenger you could only use pennzoil wait what no thanks. I wouldn't use pennzoil, quacker state, Castrol on a tricycle just my opinion.

I’d guess it’s a solid product but the buildup can mostly be prevented in the first place. They say it takes 6 oil changes with the Restore and Protect to realize full cleaning. Personally, I’ll just continue to use their Extended Protection High Mileage (higher zinc additive compared to some others) or the other top oil (Best oil per used oil analysis & regularly available either online or maybe in store), Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Mobil 1 is a mid grade oil these days per labs at a premium price.

I just picked up 5 quarts of Royal Purple at Walmart two weeks ago because it was on sale. Anyone have any opinions on Royal Purple? I have heard good things but wanted to hear from other Jeep owners.

I have a '24 Sahara V6 with 4k miles and planning to do the first oil change at 5k.

Amsoil, brah...

Actually, for my JL, I enrolled in Pennzoil's 15 year/500k warranty program available with Pennzoil Platinum synthetic. The oil meets all the gibberish spec in the owner's manual for 2023 and it has served me well in other rigs too.

It breaks down fast is what I’m reading on Bob is the Oil Guy and some YouTube oil analysis guys. We ran it at SamTech in our school drag car, 1000+ hp NA LS engine. They were a sponsor though. lol They sent the stuff on pallets. 👍🏼

For my 392, Jeep specifically recommends Penzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 full synthetic oil. I have seen manufacturers recommend a viscosity rating and recommend synthetic oil before, but I don't recall one that actually recommended a specific brand of oil before. What's up with that? If Mopar recommends it in there SRT engines I would think it would be good oil.

On the bottle of Ultra Platinum is says it is made from natural gas. Is that better somehow in regard to keeping an engine clean?

It also says it is "carbon neutral". What does that even mean? And why should I care?

I'm sure people that use this oil already know this, but just in case, I'll mention that there is a wide price range on this oil. Two of our local auto parts stores that I stopped at wanted almost $16 a quart for the Penzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 synthetic ($15.89 at NAPA). You can buy it from Amazon for $7.80 a quart with free shipping.

Back when synthetic was getting popular, people had a fear that using synthetic would make gaskets leak, due to the extra cleaning ability. All that gunk was preventing leaks and removing it would be worst.

Maybe it's just an urban legend. But if you suddenly use an oil that has 0%-100% additional detergents and something to remove engine build-up sounds like it may make an old engine too clean.

This is all hype. My 16 SRT with the 392 said the same thing guess what I used Mobil one instead and never a problem even dealerships I talked to said it was crap. For example in the 80's corvette said you had to run Mobil one in those cars I think BMW had a similar thing. It's all about whos in bed with who for that money.

Used it for something like 7 years in my JK 3.8. was not a bad oil IMO but I do not have any quantitative evidence. It was less problematic than mobil1 when it came to oil burning.

What does Valvoline Restore and Protect do?

The first-of-its-kind innovation removes up to 100% of engine-killing deposits with continuous use, restoring engines to run like factory clean while protecting against future damage.
I wonder if it would fix my failed valve lifters?
