I have always been told to stay away from Pennzoil products for daily drivers over the years. A while back I read some threads on here recommending Pennzoil platinum for our 2.0 engines and still have not decided to go that route. Recently I was told valvoline restore and protect may be a good option because of its ability to clean rings. I don’t know that much about this topic and wanted to see what you guys think. I was always told Valvoline and Mobil One were some of the best oils to use. My 2.0 is in my 2021 and almost at 42k miles. Thanks for any input.

been using PUP since it came out and will continue using it....always laugh at those who say not to use Pennzoil...or Mobil1 or Valvoline or what ever....most if not all modern oil is good....

I used it recently on a Honda engine with 175k. Ran for 1500 miles, changed oil and filter, ran 1500 more, changed oil and filter again. Continued on as normal.

The opacity of my used oil was impressive.

But I don’t have any objective metrics. Didn’t do a proper analysis.

My engine sure seemed happy both during and after its “restoring and protecting.”

VRP is meant for cleaning engines. There is no harm in running it, but if you have a newer or clean engine, it won’t be any different than any other oil.

My daughter’s 09 Camry runs much quieter on VRP than the Valvoline high mileage I was using before. I like that.

I ran VRP in my Wrangler after I bought it to clean the sins of the PO, if there were any. Now I’m using Valvoline Full Synthetic high mileage, though I’m only at 60,000 miles as my Jeep sits a lot, so I’m hoping the High Mileage oil helps the seals stay healthy.

Curious wrinkle: at least around here, the Valvoline Instant Oil Change shops won’t put it in, even if you bring ‘em a 5qt R&P yourself. That’s not a judgment on the product; I just think their VIOC systems aren’t set up for it (used disposal, new container disposal, liability, computers, etc.)

Ironic.

None... but it pays well.
A note for expectations with R&P.... initially with a used 2019 3.6L in my JL with 83k on ODO, the first 3 R&P oil changes metal deposits were seen. Of those were trapped break in particles from years or miles of use. Contamination from combustion deposits will collect those old break in particals. By removing deposits you free metal particles to be filtered or if small enough flow with the oil. Give 5 oil changes before finalizing your oil analysis results.

I got 3 changes to clean, but I run my engine hard and long. Already added 38K in a years time and 7 R&P oil changes.

The jeep dealer in San Antonio uses pennzoil.

I’ve been using PUP in my 3.6L. Almost 50k miles and no problems so far.

Used valvoline in our Camry since new. Has 120k miles and runs great.

You do you.

Nothing wrong with PUP. That being said Valvoline R&P is also a great oil. It cleaned up the pistons on my oil burning Subaru Outback and returned it to like new. It’s safe to say if R&P is run from new you will not ever have to worry about engine deposit problems.

PUP is not the recommended oil for the 2.0, just regular Pennzoil platinum per ms-13340. Valvoline Restore & Protect calcium level is safe for the 2.0 to mitigate LSPI.

Both are good oil. Take what ever help you sleep at night. Oil is like a beer, everyone and their dog have a opinion on what is a good one.

Not sure dealer really use PP, my UOA does say it is not the case unless I got the end of a drum.
