Overall, average car insurance rates are up multiple fiscal quarters in a row. As more and more people got back on the road post-Covid, insurance companies took notice and reacted. Combined with increased repair costs due to supply chain constraints, ownership costs continue to rise for the average American consumer.

Car insurance is funny when it comes to pricing. Your rate depends just as much on your zip code as your driving record. Different factors like ā€œavg. annual usageā€, eligible discounts, and level of coverage needed can drastically affect your rate. It is important to shop around regularly, and make sure your insurer has the correct information about your vehicle.

Most people don't drag race in a jeep, or engage in other risky driving behaviors. Also, insurance goes up because dealers charge more than they strictly need to for their used vehicles. The local cost to replace your vehicle also affects your premiums.

Sure they don't ?

Luckily, insurance companies are more concerned about a driver's likelihood of maiming the persons and vehicles of others. I'm actually curious how a company would handle a claim if you rolled a vehicle while rock crawling.

Maybe it's just inflation, but my new Wrangler with the same level of coverage cost me more to insure than my last car, which was known for having high insurance premiums. And the price has jumped significantly since then.

Been driving for 3 decades without a collision under the same insurer, just occasional comprehensive claims for no-fault deer strikes. My JL coverage just went from $1,575/yr to $1,725/yr while my Evo was always around $1,300 and was named "most expensive vehicle to insure" back in 2012 ($1,650 adjusted for inflation, which is still cheaper than my current rate).

Yeah my Porsche and BMW were both less expensive to insure than my Wrangler. Same time of ownership. Same use. That said insurance has gone nuts in general past two years.

By in large, rates are closely tied to vehicle safety. You're more likely to walk away with fewer injuries from an accident in a BMW, Merc or Porsche than a Wrangler. Repairing metal and plastic is generally a lot less costly to insurance companies than repairing flesh and bones so rates are set accordingly.

Prior to getting my 15 GCSRT I saw that an ~2 year old X5M was ~the same price. Fortunately I checked with insurance. The BMW was twice as much ~$440 to ~$880 —6 month quote .

Interesting. I owned a ScionXB and the rates were close to three times higher on it than the BMW335i I also owned at the time. Asked my agent about it and she offered the explanation I mentioned above.

BMW, Merc and Porsche are 2 times as much around here. Of course they are safe but you ping a fender and it is exponentially more. Wrangler is pretty safe also, my Wrangler is cheaper than any new car I have owned that I remember.

Every single state is different with different weights.

Iirc, the 392 in the photo was covered by his insurance and others here have mentioned that most policies should cover you even while you're off-road.

Technically, any parking lot or personal driveway is off-road as well, just usually not as challenging (though I've seen quite a few around here that are pretty damn rough and some insanely steep ones that are downright dangerous in the winter).

Maybe because it was an ā€œMā€ performance model, but so is the SRT. Didn’t ask why, just got the GC. Payments to the Credit Union, not the insurance company. ??ā€ā™‚
