For all you JL Wrangler owners out there, what year and color is your Wrangler? Are you seeing galvanic corrosion on the hinges and door/hood edges? I am looking to purchase a used JL Wrangler and hoping to identify which years and/or colors tend to have less galvanic corrosion problems. Is there a ‘fix’ that prevents it from coming back after repair? Thanks!

I have a 2018 sting grey Sahara with 40k miles on it. I've lucked out so far with none of the rust or mechanical problems that are frequently discussed on this forum. That said, cutting a thin rubber gasket to size and sandwiching them between the hinges would've been a simple and cost effective way for Jeep to avoid the issue.

I had my hinges fixed under warranty. Talking with the body shop guy it is not just a hinge issue, or just a Jeep issue. We know the problem is galvanic action between dissimilar metals, aluminum and steel. The body shop guy said they are seeing a lot of Chrysler products and Ford products with corrosion. He was describing how the hoods were glued onto the steel frame and that if the glue allowed the two metals to contact, that is where the corrosion started. On my Jeep, he added a plastic film in between the hinge and door. Hopefully that is enough barrier.

I had a 19 JLUR in Bikini. Bubbling on all 4 doors. Wasn't so bad that it bothered me, and I knew I was trading it in anyways.

Not likely galvanic corrosion. Hinges, hood, tailgate and doors are all made from aluminum.

My guess is water intrusion and/or poor prep as the hinges are installed pre-paint, and there's nothing coating the hinge mating surface, or the back of the hinge.

I have a 2019 Sport S JLU, 3 out of 4 door hinges at 33,000 mi. Warranty repair no problem.

My white 20 JLR has set out side for almost 3 years
And had a bubble develop on the right front bottom edge of the hood the size of a dime. Repaired under warranty. They also painted the hood and hinges. I guess it was easier. Build date was Aug of 2019.

Mine is 2022 hydro blue. I had rust proofing done as well, as I live in a northern climate.

Not sure about color, but I'd think that newer model years would have less corrosion anywhere compared to an older model, given the same climate and conditions.

The humid summers and salt-caked roads during the winters here absolutely reek havoc on metals, which only gets worse and worse over time. My JL is still less than a year old and I plan on getting an undercoat of rustproofing done in a few months, but that still doesn't provide any added protection for areas like the hinges.

My wife’s 2020 billet silver Sahara JLU and my 2021 crystal granite Rubicon have zero corrosion, and we live in tropical Florida. So far; knock on wood!

This is from aluminum-guide.com

Galvanic corrosion of aluminum
The most frequent errors aluminum structural design associated with galvanic corrosion. Galvanic or electrochemical corrosion occurs, when two dissimilar metals form an electrical circuit, closes the liquid electrolyte or a film or a corrosive environment. Under these conditions, the potential difference between dissimilar metals produces electric current, passing through the electrolyte, which (current) leads to corrosion primarily of the anode or less noble metal from this pair.

SUMMARY galvanic corrosion
When two different metals come in direct contact with the electroconductive liquid, experience shows, that one of them can corrode, ie corrode. This is called galvanic corrosion.

Other metal will not corrode, conversely, it will be protected from this type of corrosion.

This type of corrosion is different from the types of corrosion, that might arise, if both of these metals were placed separately into the same liquid. Galvanic corrosion may occur with any metal, as soon as the two different metals are in contact in an electrically conductive liquid.
