Stock head unit is toast.. Any recommendations for an upgraded head unit?

The dealer quoted me $1200. I would go through third party but need to have the warranty on it.
Yeah I sold my 7inch for 350 I think it was here on the forum. They pop up from time to time but going without a head unit for weeks or months doesn't sound good!

Insane was the one I looked at they have been at it for a while now. But 1700 dollars a bit much to bite for me.

I had to either deal with the hum of the road or use a small Bluetooth speaker and my phone while waiting on my factory amplifier to come in, took about 3 weeks and it was very aggravating. Hopefully you find something you like and in the right price point sooner rather than later.

They really should make better quality equipment, it’s unacceptable. Mine died right after the warranty ran out; of course. Im leaning towards the alpine restyle but the 6.9”. Not looking forward to dealing with aftermarket integration issues though

I have always tried to go aftermarket stereo in all my vehicles until the massive integration began. All the manufacturers are making it such a pain to change out, but I miss having a better sounding system. Looking forward to whatever you workout. I’m currently enjoying the carlinkit 4.0, I said I wouldn’t try it but I think the 8.4 sounds better using carplay and hooking up the one wire is tedious lol. I’ll rock it till it bricks.

They’re all following Apple’s playbook that’s for sure. The 8.4 was another option but many’ve mentioned update issues since it’s not tied to the vin. Will keep you posted, giving myself a week to decide

I went from a 7" to an 8.4". I've had no issues updating the radio. You just have to update manually.

I recently replaced a factory Tacoma radio that had many vehicle settings embedded into it. Pioneer and a few other brands have head units that can work with idatalink maestro, allowing the new head unit to display all the OEM vehicle settings on a menu in the headunit.

It worked perfect for the Tacoma.

Stock unit won’t power on, black screen, no music playing and no other signs of life. Dealer thinks it’s due to the sound system install.
They would. They reflexively blame any non-factory modification even remotely related.

But, not without reason. Did the OEM unit fail during or immediately after the aftermarket upgrades? In that case, yeah, the install probably messed something up.

But if you had six months of trouble free operation, and then the head unit went out, that's an unrelated coincidental failure, and they're just blowing smoke.

For 1200 bucks, it may be worth trying to repair the OEM head unit. But finding an electronics expert who can do that level of diagnosis can be problematic. If there's a failure on a board with SMD (Surface Mount Devices) then you might have to send the board to a specialty repair shop.

For that kind of money go with an aftermarket multi-media center. Much better than the stock head units could ever be.

The Insane Audio unit is pretty awesome. One of our guys here had the IA 3001 in his JL. It outshined the OE head unit by far.

He now has the newest model (4001) on order for his new JT, will post up pics when it arrives.

Guess I should've waited a bit before posting... the Insane Audio JL4001 head unit just arrived on my desk. ?

We'll be doing an install video soon. Is there anything anyone wants to see covered?

Too bad it's 30+ days out for ship time.
That's the standard tag for when we do not have the product in one of our warehouses.

Just checked with Insane Audio, they have a bunch of the 4001s in stock and can drop ship right away. So only a few days to get to you.... ;)

I'd like to see the HVAC controls as well as other integrations like heated seats, etc.

Thanks!!
