You have a solid wife my friend. Take good care of her.
Thank you, she's a keeper. Honestly she is the one that started the whole road trip thing. I'm naturally a home body, but love cars and am used to a woman dragging me somewhere from a young age.

You weren't in Telluride the 3 of July were you.

Saw a 392 in town. Not too many around.

Sam
No, I don't think we really made it out of Durango that day.

Thanks for the write up as this is how I also plan to use my Jeep, albeit shorter distance trips. Been admiring them from the sidelines for a while and finally decided to purchase one. Your perspective of highway manners from a new Jeep owner is what I've been waiting to hear.

Yeah not a single whisper of this when I ordered my rubicon 4xe. Just so many people saying it rides and handles excellent on the road. Including automotive media. I guess everybody is using previous wranglers as the bar.

Impossible to judge perspective online.
we went from a yukon Denali and wanted a slightly smaller suv that was a PHEV. only the 4xe ticked the boxes. but we were worried about road manners. almost 6000 mile road trip to SoCa. handled very well (Sahara). I think the wider road tires with 20" rims helps greatly. But balloon tires kind a critical for rock crawlers. But ours did very well on trails (I kept a air compressor incase we got in trouble and needed to let some air out of tires). the handling is superb, I think with tires and low center of gravity from the battery. some underinsured moron in a BMW ran a red light and totalled our jeep at 12K miles. My wife didnt even hesitate - ordered exactly the same vehicle again. and you will love the silent trail running - completely redefines the experience. and the passing power on the highway - wow. I started to pull out and saw a car coming way fast. hit the gas and did broke traction on all 4 wheels. about broke our necks it accelerated so instantly. Oh, currently 781 miles on the new one averaging 97 mpg overall with charging (21kW solar array on my home)

My guess is the the lift and taller tires of the XR play into this a bit. My biggest comparison is my Tahoe which is about as tall, wider, slightly heavier, and firmer springs, but is also a bit more aero.

That would be my guess also, compared to a TJ or JK, I could see the JL being worlds above, but my experience with both is limited, so all speculation at this point.
Before we started off, I warned my wife "its going to be a bit noisy" off the bat she didn't notice anything until we got near a big rig or hit higher winds.
My daily was a sierra, which is probably the same highway experience as your yukon (like the most comfortable highway cruiser ever, but not sures if yours had mag ride and 22’s, which I think is a bit rough)

My rubicon 4xe leaves a lot to be desired on the highway in comparison. It’s way louder and it requires much more steering input. I’m used to setting cruise on 80-85mph in my sierra, the jeep isn’t a big fan of that.

I just got back from an hour drive to the nj shore like 5 minutes ago in the 4xe. I’m def getting used to it and it doesn’t bother me as much as the first week of driving.

Then again my tires are set to 39psi and on a hot day they get up to 42-43psi. From what I understand this could be causing the lack of on center feel.

I've done a few couple hundred mile trips in my 392XR. I think it does well on road trips. Mine tracks straight and has tight steering. I didn't feel I needed to fight it like some folks claim. I'll be driving from Chicago down to Atlanta in two weeks.

It is a bit louder than a regular generic SUV, but it isn't unbearable. I have the hardtop and MOPAR headliner. I usually set my ACC at 78-80mph and just cruise.

I don't expect it to be as plush as a Tahoe or X5, but I find it quite comfy. I actually find it more comfortable than my Grand Cherokee.

I do plan to add headliners to help a bit with noise and heat. In some parts of AZ and TX we had issues keeping the interior cool.
Thank you for this post, very informative. Can you please elaborate on the issues you were having and how you plan on solving these in the future? Which headliners?

Just bought my rubicon and bought the factory insulation for the hardtop. I think it works great. Hot as hell in Arizona right now and the AC keeps up just fine. It doesn't make it cold but does well enough.

Thats basically where I'm at, my DDs have always been Trucks or something such as a tahoe, which will gobble up miles without a second thought and feel at home at 80+. As great as the 392XR is, it dosen't feel as happy at 80+.

Over the trip we got used to it, but it was noticeable enough for my wife not to want to drive and my son to make comments and noise and comfort.

We started the trip at OEM spec at 37psi, but after doing some research I brought it down to 34 and eventual 30-32. This seemed to help a bit with wandering, but still noticeable over a truck

I'll agree with you there, the ride was excelent and would take large bumps and potholes like a champ. We also always had crosswinds on the trip, some days worse than other.

I plan to add hotheads headliners into the jeep for temp control and noise abatement.

Nice write-up

You will enjoy the Hothead Headliners

Soft ear plugs or noise cancelling earphones are your friend when on a long trip

Most of the noise in my jeep with soft top is the sound of air gaps. Sounds like a window left open a 1/4 inch.

I wonder if the jeep hard top is similar, just less of it. Especially considering it’s designed to be removable.

Wondering if acoustic treatment is like insulating your house without fixing the hole in the wall.

Appreciate your write-up! I have a 2023 392 on order and I’ve never owned or rented a Wrangler. Your insights are helpful.
