I have a 2018 JLU rubicon I am also having the exact same steering issues , I was thinking mine was when it was cold out (around 35deg) I live in Phoenix most mornings are around 45-50 deg and I've had no problems but when I went to Moab UT last week I left early in the morning to go home it was 37 deg and thats when it first happened it scared the heck out of me so I pulled over and that seemed to be the end it until yesterday I was in Sedona AZ again I left early around 35 deg and sure enough as soon as I got up to around 60 mph it did it again I kept playing with it back and forth after maybe 3-4 min it just went away no other problems the rest of the way home I hope this helps

@JeepCares I am in Canada and has similar steering issue. I notice it more when I drive on the highway. It get very hard to turn right when driving on the highway. The steering week fill stiff. But sometime when I ether turn left or right at lower speed, I feel sometime that the steering is stuck and have to force it to turn.
Hi Patthe,

Hi all - Made my first Jeep purchase ever on Monday - a 2018 JLUR. I have 300 miles on it as of this morning and I had the steering “stick” three times in a span of 20 minutes. Two were in a parking lot and each time it felt like I was trying to pull into a spot with 4WD on. I double checked myself thinking “that was strange”... then on my way home, the road curves at roughly 45 degrees to the right and my steering locked up for about a second. I braked and almost over corrected when it kicked back in. I have my 9 month old daughter riding around with me and I’m wondering what the heck I’m supposed to do?

Forgot to mention - on the last one, I was only going about 35 mph.

@JeepCares maybe doesn't care after all? :lipssealed:

I, too, am concerned about this. I have a baby on the way and I would not want this to happen while I have my little one with me.

Any updates?

You are experiencing exactly the same thing as I have noted. The one thing that I noticed with mine is that it only seems to do it when I’m doing quick turns at low speeds and not at long sweeping turns. I gave my VIN to JeepCares, at least they’ll have it on record and I’ll have my dealer look at it as well. But, I’m afraid they won’t be able to replicate it and send me on my way. At least I’ll have a record of it. There will be more cases I’m sure, Jeep needs to figure this out quick!

I was really hoping this was a one-off issue for one person.

Clearly something is up.

Steering isn't allowed to fail intermittently on a newer vehicle.

This doesn't give you good vibes when you're about to place an order... :(

It's worth mentioning that on America's 65mph, two-lane highways (one lane each direction), a one second temporary loss of steering would easily be enough to kill you and an oncoming motorist if it happened during a sweeping right turn.

For those more mechanically inclined than me, these have recirculating ball steering, correct? What going wrong in that system could cause a quick, temporary loss of steering?

Seems like the "freezing up" issue is only on Rubicons. Why would that be the case? Isn't the same steering system used on all JLs?
