My 2018 Rubicon rear axle sensor failed three times under warranty. I was informed by my local Jeep dealership that FCA finally redesigned the locker system (or, at least, the original sensor) to prevent this from happening again. My Jeep is scheduled to have the rear axle replaced on January 11, 2022. I have been waiting for over three months on a new axle/fix.

Has anyone else heard about the new redesign, or is the dealership misinformed, and I will simply receive another bad axle, which will ultimately fail again?

As an aside, I have 35” KM3s and a reinforced HD differential cover. Each time my rear axle sensor failed, I was driving across the country (I.e., long hours on the highway). My dealership has never disputed warranty coverage and I was informed that this repair is covered under the 60,000 mile power train warranty.

I have not heard anything about a new design, although that would be MOST welcome! I'm guessing your dealer is blowing smoke, but Jeep does do incremental design changes without making a big deal about it.

Hopefully we will learn more about whether or not this is a fact as time progresses.
I’ll be changing the diff fluid in my axles around 1K miles. I’ll post up my findings on whether the locker sensors have been redesigned or not. If they haven’t then I plan on potting them at the time to ensure I don’t have future locker issues.

Any updates on this?

I want to do a few upgrades to my axles, but hesitant while there is a possibility of a sensor failure forcing an axle replacement.

how does it fail asking because last weekend when I went off-roading rear locker was kinda stuck and took extra long distance to disengage. then service 4wd light came on. restarted the vehicle and light goes off....

Sensors are the same as the ones that have been failing on Rubicon’s since 18’. No changes or redesigns. I potted my sensors and called it good for now.

Diff oil slowly works its way inside the sensor over time and since diff oil has metallic flakes in it from the bearings/gears it will cause the circuit board in the locker sensor to short out. Once that happens the only fix is a new axle. You cannot buy the sensor separately.

I may be mistaken but I could swear I saw a post on this forum a week or so ago that Jeep finally released the sensor to buy separately. But it was like $300 if I remember correctly.
Again I could be mistaken

Well if they finally released the sensor good on them! It’s about damn time. Mine are tested and working 100%. Super fast lock/unlock times.
Agreed; though if it is only the sensor, $300 seems to be overly expensive, but then again:
