Hello everyone , I was wondering if anyone else had sludge in their engine ? I’m asking because my jl gave me a cel for misfire in cylinder 4 I took the Jeep to my mechanic thinking it was a bad coil pack or injector he told me he thinks it’s a bad head gasket so I took it to the dealer for that , it has 41,000 miles . The dealer told me they found sludge in the engine and that it was due to lack of maintenance but that’s bs because I did the oil changes myself when ever the Jeep notified me to do it . I told them the sludge would be from a faulty head gasket . They are saying the engine needs to be replaced at my cost .

What dealer are you using? I've found that the right dealer service writer and tech can be hard to find. I use Cabral Jeep in Manteca and have found the writer that will work with me and she knows which tech is good with our jeeps and our needs. I switched from the dealer that I purchased at in Modesto because they refused to work on my jeep after I did simple mods.

How far did they get into it? Can you take it somewhere else?

Find a different dealer. Escalate with Jeep if necessary.

These lazy dealers count on people being sheep and not questioning their authoritah. Be firm but polite. Document everything.
I will thanks . I’ll keep you guys updated

Have them take pictures of the sludge and show you. How often did you perform oil changes? Synthetic or conventional?

Modern engines have to get oil changed more often due to the heat generated to meet emission standards. As long as you were performing oil changes at reasonable miles there should not be sludge. If you were waiting for the "oil life" indicator then not good.

The whole thing sounds kinda shaky. If the head gasket is bad then the oil would have that frothy chocolate milk look to it. Also, oil changes have nothing to do with the head gasket. Overheating could cause a head gasket failure or things like that. If you changed your oil frequently or not has nothing to do with a head gasket failure.

sludge or issues with oil consistency should be noticeable when you do your oil changes or as junky stuff on the inside of the oil cap.

If the head gasket failed around 41k miles that sounds pretty unusual. Ask more questions and find a different place to take it.

Zero wrong with waiting for the oil life indicator engineered into Jeep vehicles. This is their system and if followed should have zero push back, as again, it’s engineered into these vehicles.

That’s true. Would be nice if you had some receipts to back up the intervals you changed the oil. I know I am terrible with that kind of thing, but it would demonstrate you changed the oil.

I use synthetic , and I would do the oil change when the oil change notification would come on . Why is it bad to wait for the engine oil life indicator ? I’ll ask for pictures today .

That’s what I thought the oil life indicator was for .

I think what you did is fine. If the head gasket is bad then you have coolant leaking into the oil or cylinders and that causes all kinds of havoc.

head gasket failure has nothing to do with oil changes. Overheating could cause a head gasket failure

Don't go by the OLM, not your fault though, as Jeep has that feature and advises that owners abide by it.

Sludge from a bad head gasket is not the fault of the oil. Not checking your oil regularly and realizing there is an issue though is your fault, to a point. Everyone should pull their dipstick at least every other week. I check it weekly.

The only other thing that will sludge an engine are a lot of short trips, where the engine never gets warm enough. The block develops condensation which eventually contaminates the oil. If anyone drives a majority of short trips then make those oil change intervals sooner.

Out of curiosity, which oil and filter were you using and what where the mileages on the intervals? Did you keep a log that shows the date, miles and oil used? They should/might be able to scan the Jeep to show how many times you reset the OLM.

Yea now I wish I save receipts . I looked into autozone and I can only go back 3 months to get receipts . I’m going to see if they can help me further .
