To look forward past the current and near-term expected initial setups in the JL, it's interesting to see ZF-F modular Mild-Hybrid add-in module that is a different so of system that provides the functions similar to a BSG , but instead of being attached outside the the direct power-train it is in-line so should be more efficient, and effective, and have less system losses, from things like belt resistance or slippage in cold / wet weather, etc

It's also interesting that it can be added without taking up additional space in the engine bay, which is a good thing for the Wrangler.

This could be a a quick and easy update for the Pentastar depending on how long it stays, all without worrying about making space.

I'm not sure if they could add it to the high torque 8HP70 for the diesel, but that would be great, doubling down on torque delivery, and if it helps provide a better cold-start experience on the diesel might get me to tade-off the cold negatives for the Mild-Hybrid benefits.

https://www.zf.com/global/media/pro...brid_system/pdf_125/efficient_and_dynamic.pdf

To me the ZF modular system is the first step towards true Hybridization of the Wrangler, moving the focus past ESS starting assist to focusing more on actual propulsion.

Where does the battery for this go and how easily/expensively is it replaced?

Hopefully this will all be mute if the start/stop guy adds these models to his list.

We have a GC with this. All our other cars it remembers the last setting, not Jeep. It became annoying and a PITA to hit the button every time. We bought the module http://www.smartstopstart.com/. While a bit expensive, we will do it again for the JL.

Battery would be the same as all hybrid systems, it would be outside the drive elements.
BSG uses the same two battery system with the same external 48V primary drive battery, that part wouldn’t change as there is no need to incorporate the battery further than the requirements for other systems. However it can be placed outside the engine bay so it’s not a limiting factor.

If other cars have "remember last setting", why doesn't Jeep?!!

If that's the case it doesn't seem to be a government/CAFE requirement. Why piss off your customers for no good reason then?

Okay, cool.

I know F-150 does not.

Is it confirmed the JL won’t have a remember last setting??

Seems like such a simple thing for Jeep to add.

From the online manual: "The STOP/START system will reset itself back to ON condition every time the ignition is turned off and back on."

I was bitter about not having a last remembered setting, but really I don't see it as a big deal.

Pushing the button to disable ESS will just become a daily ritual same as putting on a seat belt, turning on radio or putting tranny into Drive. If you forget, you'll be reminded after your first stop when your engine quits.

Hopefully the button itself can withstand thousands of pushes before failing.

I almost don't wan't to write this and start some flame war, but I seriously don't understand the fear/hate of ESS.

I've driven it, after 20 min you get used to it. Not to mention reducing the idle hours of the engine.

No fear, have used many iterations over many years/kms.

Strongly Dislike it, and there is no reason that it should not be disableable or at least remember the driver’s choice from the previous use. Adding that feature doesn’t affect your user of it, forcing it on everyone is a blunt tool.

Less understandable is the support for limiting/eliminating options to disabled it.

My hope is BSG will make it less noticeable, which is why I will wait for the Pentastar+BSG, but I would prefer the Wrangler remembered that I chose to disable it.

That's a very good point, no need to force people to use it. I agree with you on that. If I ever turn it off, it'd want that setting to persist between driving sessions.

But can you explain what you dislike about it?
