Elective medical isn’t just nose jobs. It means you have a growth on arm and want a dermatologist to look at it. They really didn’t handle medical properly, I fully understand priority, but when this is all reviewed they will need more categories for medical than elective and Covid-19. The country did a great job overall. I have serious worries about when this hits third world countries.

There's a lot of collaborative work going on in the plants right now. I just can't post pics to "prove it". But it IS happening.
This is terrific to hear. Thank you.

I am simply stunned that the UAW leaders are not saying stuff like this in the press rather than, “gee, this just doesn’t feel like the right time to restart to me.” That’s nothing but a waffle.

the UAW leadership should hold a press conference and describe all the work that they are involved in to keep their members safe over the next couple of years. They should outline how they engaged with the companies and worked on SOLUTIONS together. The UAW leadership should, well, I guess, LEAD. They need to help the members get comfortable with the new normal. The UAW needs to own the solutions as much as the company. That’s what leadership is about. And, I surmise that the union leadership doesn’t want to own it — they don’t want the blame if it doesn’t work as well as planned. I’m guessing that the UAW leadership has made a careful choice to duck and cover. The membership should toss them all out and vote in true leaders.

I agree with everything that you just said.
Regarding tossing them out, guess what? WE CAN'T. Very, VERY LOOOOONG story.

Incredible.

Thank you for posting on here it has helped me understand what real folks are doing to define the “new normal” and safely gets those plants restarted. Maybe some day you will be able to get rid of all those UAW cowards and vote in a new generation of real leaders. Until then, good luck, be safe, and start building American Muscle again using American muscle.

I respect your passion on this subject, but referring to the group as "cowards" may be over the top considering our situation. In fact, the real heroes may be individuals sticking to their guns and trying to protect their families. People just want to stay safe - just as you said.

AP reported US car manufacturers are pushing back plant openings another two weeks past the May 4th date. They cite the reason as the extended stay at home orders in some states. They also say they are still negotiating with the UAW on worker safety.

From the UAW president saying they do not want production to start early May:
April 27, 2020

My Brothers and Sisters,

I want to start my message today by commending the brave UAW Ford, FCA and GM men and women who have stepped up and agreed to serve as paid volunteers, to go back into production facilities to begin readying them for a restart date. That effort began today, and these dedicated volunteers will play a critical role in putting our members’ safety first as we get our economy back to work. These members will be helping to ensure that the plants meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) health and safety COVID-19 protocols.

Now, we do not yet have a restart date, and I have made it very clear in the past few days that the members of the International Executive Board and myself feel strongly that it is simply too risky to consider an early May restart. Our concern here, first and foremost, is for the safety of our members and their families. And that will be the determining factor in when we feel it is safe to reopen these facilities. We will not move on this point.

We know that if we waiver, the cost in human life and suffering will be too great. History teaches us that it is always the role of the UAW to protect the working men and women of this nation. This pandemic may be unprecedented in our modern history, but our role as the protector of the working class is unwavering. We have made this clear in our discussions with each of the companies. And we will continue to work tirelessly to keep the sanctity of human life the cornerstone of our decisions.

Tomorrow is Workers Memorial Day, always a special day for our UAW family. This year, as the world is facing this extraordinary health crisis, it seems particularly important to recognize the members of our family who have lost their lives to workplace incidents or this terrible virus. I want to say on behalf of myself and the entire International Executive Board, we are humbled by your sacrifice and your loss and extend our sincerest sympathies to your families and your communities.

I’d also like to, again, recognize our frontline heroes in this extraordinary time. We’ve seen so many stories of our members stepping up in so many ways to help our communities and our nation. Today, one of the many brave UAW volunteers, Penni Cox from the GM facility in Kokomo, Indiana, was featured in an ABC news story (https://abcnews.go.com/US/gm-employees-building-ventilators-covid-19s-front-lines/story?id=70354222). Hers is but one of so many stories of sacrifice.

I will be talking to you more this week about our heroes and how we are working to navigate this next chapter in this terrible crisis.

As always, I urge you again to stay safe, continue to support one another and adhere to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV. For more updates, heroes stories and questions that you may have about your worksite, visit https://uaw.org/coronavirus/.

We are all in this together.

In solidarity,

Rory L. Gamble

It's possible they are seeing what is happening in other factories like in food processing. Starting to sound like very late May or possibly early June.

Actually a lot of cases in meat packing plants comes from outside the plant. It's been documented through contact tracing that many of these people don't follow the stay at home and social distancing requirements outside of work because they consider birthday parties weddings and funerals more important. One plant closed for two weeks and told all employees to self quarantine to stop the virus but when reopened they had more cases.

Oh Rory...meh.

Anywho, finally, people are reporting the truth. The stay-at-home orders are preventing a production restart.

And once again, I read nothing but a political statement from the leadership of the UAW. No leadership, just politics.

“Now, we do not yet have a restart date, and I have made it very clear in the past few days that the members of the International Executive Board and myself feel strongly that it is simply too risky to consider an early May restart.”

well, gee, ok. If I was a UAW member, I would want to know from my union leadership what is necessary, specifically, to de-risk the plants? What, specially will get that done? What have the unions in Europe done to create a safe working environment that has not been done in the US? How can it be that plants in hard hit Italy, Spain Germany, and France can reopen with active union participation? What have they done that the UAW or automakers have not yet done?

If the UAW leadership was earning their pay, this communication would have said:

members, we believe that the work environment is too risky right now and will remain too risky until the following 5 things (or 3 or 10) have been changed;
1
2
3
4
5

we are working actively with the automakers to address these 5 things and it is our belief that all of them will be in place by (date). We will send you a weekly status report on progress.”

*****

To me, that is leadership and the kind of thing that all UAW members should be looking for from their Union Leaders.

I'd like answers too (despite having inside sources regardless of my layoff), but I'm used to the vagueness from IUAW so I don't even bother worrying about it anymore.
Also, I finally uploaded an avatar so no one around here thinks I'm some bot or something. Just new to the forum. :like:
