Brings up a good question, what exactly is a panther? It isn't it's own species. It's a darker pigmented version of either a jaguar, or a leopard.

Yes, it's the black version of either jaguar or leopard. The cool thing is that the genus of all the big cats is Panthera

A guy I served with in the Army was born and raised in Jamaica he grew up with a black panther as their pet. When I first heard this I called BS. But he had pictures, and not the digital kind, this was the 90's they were real pictures. I had to eat my words and apologize for doubting him.

If that's your definition then you might need to trim your list. Cheetah, Cougar / Mountain lion, and Lynx aren't Panthera.

Mountain Lions are pretty damn common in our neighborhood in CO. They show up frequently on yard cams, usually quickly followed by frantic Nextdoor posts asking if anyone has seen a given dog or cat.

I see, I didn't know that those cats are not considered big cats
