After reading this thread and a couple of others - which wireless adapters work best for Apple CarPlay? Is there an adapter that works with Apple that shuts off before the USB 1hr timeout?

Sounds like AAWireless works great but maybe better for Android with the app?

CarLinkit 5.0 also sounds good but it seems like it’s on till the USB power shuts off.
I got a cheap usb switch off amazon and turn it on n off before exiting the jeep and on my return, the adapter lives in center console

You answer your own question. The CarLinkit adapter is the best, in my opinion.

From CarLinkit:

"The wireless adapter has minimal power consumption and won't significantly affect the car or phone battery. Additionally, if you notice the adapter's light still blinking after turning off your car, there's no need to worry. This occurs because there's residual current in the USB port. You can choose to unplug the adapter, or simply disregard it, as it will automatically power off after a short while."

I've had a CarLinkIt in my console for a few years now and if it's draining power for an hour then it's negligible. It can't be any worse than all those other parasitic drains. I've got a hybrid parked next to the Jeep in my garage that's sometimes making a humming noise in the back 3 hours after it's turned off to change the fuel tank pressure.

I thought the USB ports stayed on for approx 45 mins after shutting off the engine then powered off, I think I read that somewhere several years back

Yes, but that has no affect on the CarLinkit adapter nor anything else. As quoted, the CarLinkit adapter "will automatically power off after a short while".

I've never had any issues with the various CarLinkit adapters I've used in this regard. Once I shut my Jeep off and walk away, my phone does nothing in terms of trying to reconnect.

Once you shut off the vehicle and walk away, the device plugged into the usb port will stay on for 45 minutes.
And if you’re still in range of said device with your phone, your phone will stay connected to said device until the port of the car actually shuts down.

It actually depends on the device.

Mine does not stay connected to my CarLinkit device when I shut the vehicle off and walk away. My Jeep can be in my driveway while I walk into my house and the connection drops.

It depends on the device.

I don't pair my iPhone to the vehicle (uConnect) itself, only to the CarLinkit adapter.

Mine is connected to Apple CarPlay which will stay connected as long as it’s in range.

Sounds like you’re getting out of its range.

That would make no sense to be connected to the device while you’re in the car and it stays connected, it doesn’t drop the connection.
But once you shut off the car and go inside, your phone automatically knows you’re at home and magically disconnects.
Your device in the car is still powered on for 45 minutes which means for your phone to disconnect, you will either need to be out of range of device or disconnect your phone manually from it.

So, sounds like you’re getting out of range of device once you get into your house which is what I originally said.

I was just giving a theoretical example.

No. I've posted about this once before and CarLinkit has info about it posted. The CarLinkit device severs the dedicated CarPlay WiFi connection when the vehicle and the radio is powered off. I don't set my iPhone WiFi settings to connect to the CarLinkit device. This happens automatically via CarPlay. My iPhone doesn't even show it is connect to WiFi when connected to the CarLinkit device.

"CarPlay transfers the data via WiFi, not Bluetooth. BT is only used for the handshake to let the CarPlay enabled device know that it’s present, it then switches to WiFi for all data transfer."

@TopGunViper

Here is also general info on how Wireless CarPlay works (you can substitute the CarLinkit device for where it says car):

Wireless CarPlay works by connecting your iPhone to your car's infotainment system without a physical USB cable, utilizing Bluetooth technology to initially pair the devices and then using a dedicated Wi-Fi network for data transfer, allowing you to access your phone's features like navigation, music, calls, and messages through your car's display, all while keeping your phone wirelessly connected.

Key points about wireless CarPlay:
  • Initial setup:
You usually need to connect your iPhone to the car via USB once to establish the initial pairing, and then your car will remember your phone for future wireless connections.

    • Bluetooth for pairing:
Bluetooth is used to establish the initial connection between your phone and the car.

    • Wi-Fi for data transfer:
Once paired via Bluetooth, the car and phone create a dedicated Wi-Fi network to transfer data for features like navigation and music streaming.

Either you or I are missing the point.
I know how CarPlay works and connects.
If your CarPlay device is powered on, which it stays powered on in the Jeep for 45 minutes after the car is shut down, and you’re in range of the CarPlay device with your phone, they will stay connected until either you’re out of connection range between the CarPlay device and your phone or the carplay device is shut off.

Iā€˜ve never heard of a CarPlay device knowing your car and your radio is shut off. The CarPlay device only knows it is still getting power or not.

Maybe you can enlighten me how Carlinkit stays powered on but knows the car is shut off and the radio is shut off and is still being powered but it severs your phone connnection…?
