Sooo... I see a lot of members from all over the country getting their new Jeeps and having their windows tinted what appears to be significantly dark.

My state only allows 35% max and it's so light it's almost not worth even having it done, but I do because it gets extremely hot here during the summer months. Also, most places will fail you/ have you pay to get it removed before passing.

How do you get around to getting your tags/registration renewed when inspection time rolls around? Do you have a friend pass you? Do you have a waiver? Or do you just get your tint removed and redone every year or two (depending on your state's requirements)?
I don’t agree that 35% is so light it’s not worth having it. It’s a safety issue. You can’t see at night if there isn’t an abundance of street lighting. Maybe fine in a city, but...

Here in CT I do legal tint and am very happy with it. On one vehicle years ago I went darker, and I regretted it and had to get it changed. I just could not make safe turns on back roads without rolling down my window to see.

My (unpopular I’m sure) $0.02.

Nah, you're absolutely right about it obstructing your peripherals at night. I couldn't see jack whilst driving the vehicle I had before my Jeep, for me it's just more aesthetically pleasing.

WV is 35% but they really don’t enforce it. Me and my wife have ran 20% and 5% and passed inspection. Just sucks here have to pay for a special inspection sticker for modded vehicles. Even if there isn’t a lift and just the tires stick out past the flares have to pay extra. I loved the 13 years I lived in Pigeon Forge Tenn. Didn’t have to worry about tint, inspection, taxes every year on a vehicle. Simply pay 15.00 for new tag on my plate. Best years and loved that TJ!!!

I've never had a tint in my vehicles expect with my very 1st one...92-94 celica that I bought used and it was purple already :cwl: being from Los Angeles , I know cops can be assholes and pull u over if they're bored and use it as an excuse....also, I never got my insurance card replaced and didn't want to deal with a fix it ticket... with that in mind...I might go for a low tint

How does it work if you got the max legal tint level in your state, then drive through other states on vacation? Do they look up the tint level based on the state your plate is assigned to, or do you get a ticket for that state's tint law? I Googled it, and seems you get a ticket if the state you are vacationing in has more strict tinting rules.

Correct. You are subject to the tint laws in the state you're visiting.

Well that sucks. So besides Alaska, Hawaii, what is the lowest common denominator tint level?

Just wanted to give you all a head up. Not sure how it works in other states and bear in mind there are several factors taken into consideration in determining how the accident occurred, but several police officer friends of mine have told me that in the event that you find yourself in an accident when it's dark or at night and you have your windshield tinted, that can be used against you during the investigation as probable cause for the accident.

Just a heads up to those considering going super dark.

I agree with your debatable unpopular opinion. I have tints on my driver and passenger side windows. I don't know the percentage since they came with my WJ when I bought it (3rd owner), but they're not what I would consider super dark in the grand scheme of the window tint scale. I live in a city with plenty of light. Guess who still occasionally has to roll down his windows when parallel parking because it's too dark to see clearly with the windows rolled up?

Colorado has an interesting law. It's 27% on all windows OR if you have less than 75% on the front two windows you can do the rear seat windows and back window as dark as you want.

I will just have them match my front windows to the factory rear windows as I would assume those are low enough for all the state laws.

Does anyone know what the factory tint is? I would assume they could only go as dark as the strictest state as they sell in all 50, right?

Luckily my brother is a cop so I don't worry about such sillyness. I like the dark.

MN troopers carry a light transmission device that tells them the amount of tint. They normally won't pull you over for just that...but will add that violation to the rest if they do stop you.

The new meters are so small and simple most law enforcement agencies will be supplied soon (if not already)!

Ours in Ohio is 50% for the front windows. Over the past few years I am hearing from more and more folks getting ticketed for too dark of tint. It's mainly the state troopers who are nailing them though, as the local guys and gals don't really care about it.
