Why does our 4WD thingy have a Neutral?

The long thingy I know how it works, but the lil guy has one too. What purpose does it serve?

Maybe it just means you have to be in neutral before going into 4low. Just throwing a guess out there.

For flat towing the transmission should be in park and the tcase should be in neutral. This works because the rear output shaft on the transfer case drives its pump so fluid is still circulating and the case doesn't overheat. The transmission on the other hand has fluid driven by the front pump, which isn't rotating if the transmission is in neutral and being spun by is output shaft. Nearly burned my old XJ up flat towing when my dog hopped in at the gas station and stepped on the transfer case shifter putting it back in gear. You could hear the fluid inside the transmission boiling when I pulled over from the smoke in the rear view. Trans was shot obviously.
