Hey, I have a 2019 JL Sahara and recently I’m hearing a low pitch whining noise when I’m turning at low speed, both left and right. The whining noise is not at a consistent pitch, like a on off sequence. The power steering fluid is topped-up. Any suggestions where this noise is coming from? O’ yes, the noise only happens when the car is warm - either it’s been driven for ten minutes or left out in sun. Thanks

I’ve done research and I think it’s the Electric Power Steering (EPS) Motor Noise. The JL uses an electric power steering system rather than a hydraulic one.
  • When the system warms up, the EPS motor or bearings can produce a low whine or moaning noise, especially during low-speed steering inputs.
  • The “on-off” nature describes fits the EPS assist motor working intermittently as steering torque demand changes.
  • The noise may be amplified if the steering rack mounts or subframe bushings are slightly loose.
Anyone else had the same issue?

To prove your theory, start the Jeep and wait for the engine to settle to normal idle, then move the steering wheel left and right. It doesn’t take much, you should hear the pump noise start and then stop if you take your hand off the wheel. I had a 2020 with the the original pump, later replaced via the TSB - the new pump and software was significantly louder. My 2024 is louder still, easily heard at idle or low speed.

All i know is rubicons definitely have the wine but it's a higher pitch. Ive had it since new and when i hear that distinctive whiny sound rest assured i can look up and spot the rubicon. I didn't notice if all JLs do it or not, but it's that hydroelectric pump thingy (that's the technical term). If i had the money I'd do a psc conversion to a traditional steering pump, but i don't have money for stuff like that
