Thanks for the information, I did look at the Podium in stainless steel but they haven't arrived yet I guess there made in China.Figure aluminum was my best bet to avoid salt rusting out the steel nerf steps.Watch a video of a guy who had NFAB black powdercoated nerf step and the tube steel for the steps completely rusted through the bottom half the tube was gone.Their RKR looks good rock rail with bolt on step but I would imagine road salt would eat through that model as well.

I decided today to go with the RockSlide Engineering Slider/Steps. The rest of the options out there just don't drop down far enough for the wife and kids and will interfere with hitting the trails.

NFAB with removable steps, work great for my wife and boys.

Are they strong enough to function as a rock rail with the step off? Or are they even intended for that?
They are frame mounted and mounted to the pinch weld, they have tubes under the frame, pinch weld, and outside where the step mounts. I don’t rock bash but this style from NFab has held up on the rocks I do run without any issues and protected the pinch weld area just fine.

These cheap steps just popped up on Quadratec (https://www.quadratec.com/p/go-rhino/4000-series-3-round-tube-steps-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-jl) for $180. Any idea why they would be 1/2 the cost of every other option out there? The main downside I am seeing is the aesthetics and vulnerability of exposing the body corner where the factory rubicon rails are.

those are pinch weld mounted. they will only work as a step. not good for protection off road. and with that i bet the tubing is super thin

Installed these as I like the covered option Rock Hard has with their tubular rails. This way when I'm washing the vehicle I don't have to watch where I step. LOL. One person can install if need be, recommend two. Takes about 1.5 hrs to do the install. Very sturdy and solid. Looking forward to using them soon.

My stock running boards were damaged on the rocks at Drummond Island Marble Head trail this past weekend. I’ve got access to a set of Motor City Aftermarket Rock Rails at a pretty good price. They are steel with a 5 year warranty to the coating. They attach using the same factory bolts for the current step.

I don’t plan to do anything super crazy in my new JLU which has less than 5k miles with stock tires and no lift kit. But I do plan to go on a few trails.

Are these attachment points sufficient for level 4-5 trails? Or should I be looking for something more heavy duty?

Thanks!

I can get a used set for $400

I think the MCA rails are plenty tough, and will be more than enough protection. I was looking at them too, but the price is a bit high for me. The price you can get makes them a steal.

I just ordered ROAM frame mounted rock rails yesterday. They are back ordered, not sure how long of a wait I got. They have a similar quality finish, but my wife likes the idea of real step vs a bar to step on to get into the Jeep. And, for me, I didn't want to sacrifice ground clearance, and wanted a bit more side protection than the factory Rubicon rails gave me. Of all the mods, it wasn't one I was planning on doing so soon.
