Which Inreach device?

I've had a Mini for years. Love it. Like the independence from my phone for emergencies and routine checkin's. I keep extended family updated nightly and start/end of a trek using the 3 free preset messages. The few times I need to send more information, my Android phone works fine. Since I solo hike quite a bit, the SO loves it knowing where I am each night. If I disappear in an alien space ship, she at least knows where I was last night and where to send search and rescue. Has never happened.

What Motorola is that and what radio services do you have programmed?

AT&T and Verizon will be using ASTS satellites for cell service coming soon. T-mobile has a deal with starlink for something similar. Maybe next year or so the service will be available negating the need for sat phones and inreach devices...

The Motorola radio is the XTL5000 Hi-powered remote with the O5 controlhead. I have GMRS and Business Radio Services channels with some Business freqs programmed as P25 Digital channels.

I have 43 zone banks, 13 conventional personalities, 5 scan lists, for approx total 800 channels.

The APX series mobile radios will allow for two radios of any operating band be operated from one controlhead.

I'm a total newby about sat phones. Has anyone used an Inmarsat phone? Feedback on them would be appreciated.

It is a $895 phone that you get for "free" if you buy a one-year prepaid service plan. The plan includes 150 minutes a month, which is way more than I would ever need. The 150 minute per month plan cost $895. So, you could look at it like you are buying the phone and getting the plan for free, or like you are buying the plan and getting the phone for free. They also have cheaper plans starting at $49 a month, but you don't get the phone for free with that plan.

Here in southwest Virginia, many of the trails are in mountains and cell signal disappears frequently. I want to pull the trigger on an Inreach device. I’m curious as to which one you use and if you would recommend it.

I have a Zoleo (works a lot like the InReach) and have used it without issue on two emergencies (not SOS, but to communicate with a friend when I was stuck in the mountains).

I was quite impressed with the ability to get a message out. So, I ended up buying my 24 y/o son a Zoleo to take when he goes mountain biking in areas with no cell service.

InReach uses Iridium constellation.

iPhone uses Globalstar. InReach uses Iridium (as mentioned above). If my life depended on it, I would go with Iridium.

Satcom on cellular is in the 3GPP standards in Rel 17 and 18. So - coming soon to an Android near you.

iPhone 14 on up or InReach Mini 2 with monthly subscription. The only current clear advantage for the InReach is weather and crumb trail right now.

How does the iPhone 14 work exactly? I didn’t know that.

Zoleo for us. We like the unlimited check in feature. I push one button and 4 of my contacts receive a text. It says "I'm OK, here is my location". Sends clickable map. It can also email. The plan I have is $20 a month and only $4 a month when deactivated. It also interfaces with your phone through Bluetooth.
