So, looking at various options for ton axles. I really like the UD60, but it only comes in 68.5" width, unless I'm missing something. Also considering the XD60 that come in either 68.5 or 72.5. Everywhere I read says to run 72.5 if you want 40" tires. Right now I have stock axles with -38 offset or 3.50 of back spacing. They do offer the same wheel I have in an 8 lug with the same offset/backspacing. To the point I guess. What offset/backspacing do I need if I run a 72.5? Why do I need a 72.5 over 68.5? I know this is based off of opinion, but who has the best ton axles? Is there something better than what I'm looking at? I've looked at Fusion, Dana, spicer, and several others. Cost is a concern, but cry once is better than saving a few bucks now. Thanks for the help. I'm still a little ways away from buying them. I want to have everything when I do it, including new bumper with spare tire carrier.

Definitely go with 72.5" width.

Look at all of Pain Train's pics. I'm running a 72.5" wide XD60/80 package. The width makes it look super aggressive plus all of the stability and wheeling benefits; you won't be disappointed.

I'd suggest running the widest axles you can afford with the largest backspacing wheels you can find. Your steering will thank you. So 72.5" for 40's to keep your tires away from the frame bits.

72.5" XD60's on 40's with 4.5"BS for reference.

I run a 5" BS Raceline with a 40x12.50.

So my wheels now have 3.50 of backspacing and the are -38 offset. They stuck out way further than my old wheels that were -18 offset. Is a smaller backspacing number or larger what I need?

With whichever axle you go with, you want to achieve the best scrub radius possible. You'll need the center of the wheel to be in-line with the ball joints as close as you can. On a 9" wide wheel, a BS of 4.5 will get your wheel right at half. The axle you buy should have the scrub radius designed into the C to help you have effortless steering. Those 3.5" BS wheels are not ideal not are they good for steering in a bind.

I won't have any rubbing if I do the 4.5? I plan on doing the 72.5. I really like the UD60, but it only comes at 68.5

What suspension are you using?

Are you staying with a spring type suspension?

The 72.5" is also for guys running coil overs and need the room in there for components. You won't have any issue with the 68.5" axle.

No, you won't have any rubbing issues. All I ran on Fat Ninja and Honey Badger were 4.5" BS wheels. It's really the sweet spot for a 9" wheel.

I have a 4.5" MetalCloak Gamechanger lift, and I plan on staying with that. Maybe one day do coil overs, but who knows. I do plan on putting the PSC Big Bore steering and Ram on it.

You'd be in great shape with 68.5". I wouldn't worry at all about the wider axles unless you really want them. They have several benefits, but nothing really to be concerned with.

soinds good to me. Between axles, steering, wheels, tires, and a bumper with 8 lug tire carrier I’m guessing around $26k for everything. That’s me installing it all. So close to having that saved. Keep my fingers crossed no disasters happen at the house.

I understand man... Next month is 20 months I've been saving, waiting on parts, and working on Pain Train. It's a long process, but absolutely worth it. I'm literally welding on the cage right now trying to take advantage of the weekend time I have free at the moment.

Sounds cool. Shit, I went to donate plasma for the extra money. I can’t because of my tattoos. They can’t stick the needle through the ink. Some fda law about ink poisoning on the person receiving the plasma. I don’t care what it takes. I’m getting them. Anyone want to buy a kidney?
