2021 JLUR 11k miles. Finally got around to undercoating this thing last week (B’laster Surface Shield) when I found this damage—and I can’t imagine how it happened. It’s below the passenger A pillar.
Have you ever seen this? What do you think caused it?
We’ve used Jeep Wave 2x (at two different dealers), and the blind spot monitoring went out entailing a trip to a third dealer. Other than that, it’s been sitting in our garage if not driven.

Something scrapped it off looks like. Was there at one time?

The way it’s folded back so evenly leads me to suspect someone intentionally folded it back. Thoughts?

I feel like something like that has to be man-made. Have you ever had an aux battery replaced? If so, maybe the mechanic peeled it back looking for the aux battery box before realizing he was looking in the wrong location.

Pardon my lack of drawing skills but from the imprints in the insulation and the portion missing it almost looks like someone slid their hand in like this to pull it back:

The only non-oil change work completed was the BSM work finally completed yesterday. The BSM issue was diagnosed prior us noticing this damage. The BSM repairing dealer said they were never under the vehicle.
The first dealer to change the oil was an fing disaster. They installed the drain plug so tight the 2nd oil change dealer had to weld a bolt onto the drain plug to remove it.
this damage isn’t that close to the drain bolt (as you can see in the video), but possibly could something in the welding process have somehow gotten over there and addressing that lead to this damage??? Pure speculation, of course.
Why can’t dealerships competently change the oil?!?!?! Completely unacceptable.

I wouldn’t be surprised if your vehicle came like that from the factory.

Over the years I found Chrysler/FCA to be generally nonchalant about the application of heat shielding and sound deadening material.

I haven’t owned Ford or GM vehicles to determine whether this is Chrysler-specific or a common attitude among Detroit manufacturers. My Mexico-built 2019 Toyota Tacoma and Japan-built 2018 Fiat 124 Spider show much better attention to detail under the hood, inside the trunk and under the undercarriage.

But just from seeing the big giant mess Ford vehicles are under the hood, I’d guess Jeep is no exception.

That’s a factory problem. A robot clearly smashed the heat shield against the transfer case / transmission when the body was set on the frame. There is zero possibility the dealership did that.

this reminds me to take a look under the hood of my gf’s moms new to her 2016 explorer sport. Her 2003 and 2009 expeditions had quite a bit of room but I’m betting this isn’t the case anymore.

Giant plastic tubes everywhere. Can’t see anything. Great engine but god awful nightmare to work on.

Definitely possible. You have to look up to see it. As I think about it, I haven't done that before applying the undercoating (I live in middle Tennessee—undercoating is barely needed here, I just hate rust having grown up in the rust belt).

Interesting. Never thought of that.
