Brought home my JL Sport S yesterday. Totally didn't realize that the Uconnect 3 doesn't come with the Carplay and other fun features. But it is an upgrade from my 15 Rubicon that didn't have any of the techie gadgets in the first place. Does anyone know- would this be upgradeable? or am I just stuck unless I go aftermarket?

I had been told on my Rubicon that had I had the hands free capability, I could have upgraded, but since I didn't I was just out of luck.

Honestly, It doesn't really matter much- I got a $100 refund for my sirius subscription and I can use bluetooth etc..

Thanks! -A

You'll still be able to play audio directly from your phone ect, but yeah I think the head units in the JL are supposed to be water resistant, so I'm not sure how going aftermarket is going to affect that.

the Uconnect 4 with 7" display is an available option on the Sport S, so I image you could add it later but at what cost? Hopefully it would be an easy plug-n-play upgrade and not require a bunch of new wiring harnesses.

One dealer said can't do it.. Another said could do it but looking at like $1200. Conflicting info. I love conflicting info... not.

I'm sure Alpine will have an after market option.

So you could get that or wait for someone with the Uconnect 7 or 8.4 to put theirs up for sale.

Once the JL has been out for a while, you'll be able to replace it with a different RA4 unit. There'll be a marketplace for them for sure. It's actually pretty easy to get inside the dash and remove. You'll have to replace the bezel, too, but that shouldn't be an issue.

If these units are anything like the ones offered in other FCA vehicles, you'll have to match your replacement based on the model it originally came with. That would mean it'll need to be from another JL and from a Sport specifically. Don't quote me on that, but that's typically been the case with folks wanting to swap out the RA3 with an RA4. For example, people who wanted Android Auto/Apple Carplay in a '15 or '16 Challenger needed to swap the unit from a '17 that came out of the same trim (ie: SRT, GT, etc...).

The UConnect 4 option on the Sport S also includes the upgraded cluster display, so maybe that would have to be swapped also for everything to function properly.

I'm sure if you can even find the right unit to buy you would have to buy a factory system to make all the functions work and have the Jeep flashed at the dealer.

How much capability does that small unit have? As a Sport buyer it's my only option. I figured it was a substantial improvement over the very sad base JK unit, which is good enough for me.

I don't know the differences but your statement has to be true. Love my JK but that green digital readout on everything is really out dated and old.

Looks like a solid base "infotainment" (really these basic bitch systems are solely stereos) to me!

I imagine it will be something stupid price wise. Mopar will probably charge a couple grand, but not sure as I haven't looked into it.

Possibly, but I don't see why that would matter, even if certain features aren't available. If the purpose of swapping the unit is to simply get Android Auto/Apple Carplay functionality, I would imagine the instrument cluster wouldn't have anything to do it. I'm still speculating at this point. To go back to my previous example again, the RA3/RA4 swap on the Challenger is simply plug and play. Hopefully, that'll be the case with the JL.
