HI All
I just checked my oil on the 2024 JL sport. It has 1200 miles on the gage. It is way over full, by at least 2 quarts, this is the way it came to me from the dealer. I then checked the oil pressure gage. At 158 degrees the oil at idle,1200 R.P.M., is 17 pounds P.S.I Is this acceptable? Will over fill, and low pressure do much damage ?

You could drain the oil yourself. But Sounds like a visit to the dealer is in order.

The Wrangler uses a multi-stage oil pump. It provides the minimum PSI required for the demands being placed on the engine at a point in time. At idle, +/-17 PSI is about what I observe on my oil pressure display. When accelerating, particularly when in a brisk manner, that same reading should increase to 48 PSI* or so, after which it will settle down based on a variety of factors like engine RPM (and by extension the gear that you are in), the length of time that you are holding that higher speed, etc.

*Based on my observations with the 2.0T and the 8-speed automatic. Other powertrain combinations may be different.

The multi-stage pump is used eek out additional MPG from the engine, by powering the pump only so much as is necessary to provide the required PSI. While the effect is fractional, it's of a piece, so to speak, with the other things being used to maximize fuel economy.

Yes, do take action to adjust the engine oil volume to the correct level, sooner rather than later. Too much oil can be as problematic as too little of it in the sump.

What side motor do you have? My 2.0 reads high on my dipstick. I questioned the dealer and they said that’s how they are after comparing my dipstick to another dipstick and comparing the fluid levels.

I would certainly drain the "extra oil" out, but wouldn't worry much about engine damage. I got one of the famous Jeep Wave "6+ qt oil changes" at my dealer and drained out the "extra oil" once I noticed it around 2K after the oil change. I haven't paid it much mind since then, as I have the remainder of my Powertrain Warranty if something goes awry with the engine.

I change my own oil and adding the exact amount the manual states, it always shows 3/8 - 1/2" over max.

I waited 2 hours after shut down, on level ground to check my oil on my 2.0 engine. I will go to the dealer tomorrow and have them check it out. It seems that it reads O..K. with it reading more than full. Got to go now and read the Manual. Maybe I have been doing it wrong for the past 65 years.

You cannot wait 2 hours after shutdown to check it or it will give a false reading. As @NWJeepr said, read the OM for the procedure. It is typically check when warm after allowing 5 minutes once shutdown.

The 2.0 oil level is a head trip. You aren’t doing it wrong for other engines; this one IS different.

IMO, the dipstick should also have a “Full cold” mark in addition to the existing cross-hatch section, and an inscription that refers to the OM for the warm check procedure. It doesn’t, and confusion ensues.

I went through this on my first oil change. After refilling with 5.0 quarts, I was shocked to see what appeared on the dipstick; over-full by what looked like almost 2 quarts. That's when I went searching, and read in the owners manual that the check should be done at 5 minutes after shutting off a fully warmed up engine. When I did, it was spot on "full" and not over.

So goes owning an Italian-designed engine.

On my 2.0 I changed the oil and filter. Poured 5 qts in and drove it. Let it sit overnight and checked it. As expected it was above full on the dipstick. I used a punch and put 2 dimples on the dipstick where the oil level was. Now I can check it that way or the way described in the owners manual. I prefer checking it cold first thing in the morning using my marks on the dipstick.

Hi All:
I just want to thank you for all the help and advice you gave me, especially the "new" procedure how to check oil level. I guess I need to read the owners manual from cover to cover to see what else is changed.

It seems to be a "thing" with some OEMs and their newer engine offerings. My Ford 2.7L Ecoboost uses the "old style" as does my son's 2021 Kia K5, but my Grand Cherokee uses the new method.

OEMs can never agree on anything...
