Ok I have searched and can't seem to find the post. I know some people have talked about using a pump to do oil changes. I would like to give it a try but was wondering what the downsides would be. Now I have tried a quick drain plug and could not get it on. Ordered the one that everyone on here said was the right size but couldn't get it threaded on. Didn't want to force it and have other problems. I tried the oil udder thing but I guess I am to dumb for it cause it kind of collapsed on me and oil went everywhere. Also the normal tried and true change I must just be to clumsy. The last time the oil filter slipped out of my hand and I ended up with oil everywhere. Help this clumsy guy do a clean oil change please.

Wear disposable latex gloves. Shove paper towels down where you think the oil will drip. I remove the filter and put a cheap paper plate under it before dripping oil across the engine bay. Get a larger oil drain pan. Practice makes perfect. I believe in you.

I also use a large drip pan under the drain pan:

I use this little guy…

It gets all but the last few drops. I still pull the drain plug to finish but it’s a much cleaner experience.

I never liked the idea of sucking the oil out of the dipstick hole until a Benz tech showed me how effective their machine was. We drained the sump on my E430 Sport. He used the pump, then we dropped the underscuttle panel and pulled the drain plug. Not a drop was left in the oil pan. I’m not sure the Amazon stuff would be as effective.

The secret is to keep moving the pickup tube to get into the best position to get the last little bit.

Its an oil change its not meant to be a clean process. Just get good at cleaning up messes.

Unless you have exactly the right length hose with the right end, it's hard to be 100% sure you got all of the oil. The end of the tube has to be at the bottom of the lowest point in the bottom of the sump. If not, you can leave some oil behind.

That isn't necessarily a really terrible thing though. Every oil change that isn't a full engine teardown leaves some residue behind. And there's always some left in the bottom of the pan. As long as you get more than 95%, you're good. The new oil will dilute whatever is left behind. And the new filter will get some of that.

As long as you're doing an oil change often enough, it won't cause any long term harm.

I’m not sure how much old oil stays in the sump on a JL/JT 3.6L. On the old 3.8L it retains about 1/4 qt in the sump at least. Oil extraction is a good remedy in that case

use a piece of cardboard from the boxes your cool accessories come in....if you run low on cardboard that is a sign to order more cool stuff.....I change oil in 4 different vehicles and rarely have spilled a drop....fuggg I must be old to even respond to an oil change thread....

if you want to get all the oil out just start your rig with the oil plug and filter off......let it run until it starts clattering.....then you know you got most of the oil out.....then if you want to do a nice port and polish job on the head take some fine sand and pour slowly in the intake while the vehicle is running......read the fine print tho.....don't really try any of this
