The replies to this thread have been fascinating. My takeaway is that for most, in the end emotions are more important than evidence.

Actually while reviewing the thread you concentrate on the emotive response while ignoring the technical one. For instance you ignored my reply about the oil sheering issue in the report while roaniecowpony provided you a way to fix it. Both reply are not emotional but based on facts that is widely debated in various oil thread.

Also I wanted to say thank you for providing the data point about sheering in 0w20 settling the argument about tight tolerance requiring to absolutely run 0w20. :like: You sir proved evidence that 0w20 can sheer up to 0w16 in around 8k miles.

None... but it pays well.
You should always check the filter media too.

I did with 5k oil change. Mostly because I am using a new product and wanted to see how well it is doing. When I returned home with my used jeep, the milage was around 5k since oil change. When I changed out the oil and filter it was clean for 5k use. But the new product stated it will clean deposits on pistons. So I expected a bit of cleaning. When I pulled the filter and checked the media, there was a significant amount of carbon deposits... nothing larger than very small dust particals. I expect not as much on the second round. This time using a mopar filter because it's white. Some time next summer I will use a 20k filter while I do the spark plugs and coils, and check how well the filter media traps. I expect to see less and less deposits with each oil change.

i did Used Oil Analysis on my EcoDiesel @ 10K and 40K miles so far; results using Red Line 5W40 and the Mopar filters reinforced my practice of doing oil changes every 5K miles, and indicated i could consider extending OCIs a tad.

i'll test one more time @50K to see if anything is changing, and consider going out to 7.5K miles OCIs if everything is still looking good at that point.

For me it has noting to do with emotions. There's nothing inherently wrong with changing oil at regular intervals based on time or mileage nor is there anything wrong changing oil using data points.

I didn't ignore your reply. It was just too cryptic for me to understand.

I have been reading oil analysis from the sidelines on many platforms over the years. Mobil 1 has saved an engine or 2 for me personally. What I've seen shows 3,000 miles is too early and 10,000 is too late. I aim for 5k changes myself, but don't sweat if it goes over. I would also recommend 5w30 or even 10w30 depending on your climate.
