Been debating JKU Recon or JL Rubi. But the latter is over budget.

I just sold an 04 Rubi, and TBH have no need for another rubi, but I like the look it offers as in tire size, hood, height, and bumpers.

I'm seeing Sport vs Rubi JLs at about $10k difference.

I can get Rubi wheels/tires for $900
Hood and painted for maybe $1k
Bumpers for $1200-1500
And say lift it for another $800

That's adds up to about $4200

Does that seem close? Anything else I'm missing?

Leather isn't needed, nor is 8" nav screen

Just my opinion, I would get a JL sport over a JKU recon. I had a 2012 JKU and the technology jump and other features makes the JL worth it even in a Sport.

You can always make a sport look how you want over time. Upgrade to the new model and take your time customizing it.

I'm doing a similar thing. I'm going to start with just the tires and I think it will go a long way. To me the Rubicon should be about capability - transfer case, lockers, disconnect, gearing, axles - all things I don't need. Similar cosmetics can all be achieved aftermarket in a way that makes it your own.

But I will say this - Price it both way. My Rubicon build and my Sport S build were less than $3,000 apart.

RUBI Baby!!!!!

I got the Rubi. I absolutely love the hood. And those tires and elevated wheel flares. But it can get pricey.

My only advice.....DON'T SETTLE!!!!

Same here. Sport and gonna quickly get some Rubicon wheel and tire takeoffs. Leaves one a lot of money to customize their rig, instead of paying for some things they really don't care about. I would love to have the Rubicon offroad technology, as I'm a serious offroader, but I can't allow myself to buy a $38,000 2 door suv at this point.

Decide what you truly want. Is the hood worth a grand to you? Can you go without it? $800 is a cheap, probably spacer lift. I would put something higher quality in a brand new vehicle. Or are we talking about trying to put JLR suspension in a JL sport?

You'd be better off buying your own bumpers anyway, so I'd call that a plus.

Saving money and putting it into your own coop aftermarket stuff gets you a more unique, customized rig for less. Instead of trying to exactly emulate a Rubicon, just make your own "cool modified JL".

I should add that I daily drive an 01 cherokee and had the 04 TJ so when i test drove an 18 JKU Recon loaded it felt like I was driving a Cadillac.

So while the JL I'm sure has some added comfort is it really enough I guess???

I agree that if someone is going to spend $5,000 to make a Sport a "Rubicon Light" they should take a closer look at this site to see how to get a good deal on a Rubicon and do that.

But I don't consider a Sport settling.

Perhaps I'll wait for a low mile Rubi, see if I can get someone to eat the destination cost and a little more depreciation tho I know that wont ne much.

Watching a video on the recon now and it may be worth the wait

What's the price of the sport you configured and what was the price of the Rubi?

get the Rubicon if you can. I did. I was dead set on getting a JL Rubicon and I'm glad I got it.

There are some really good prices on the Rubicon in Maryland - 5% below invoice and your doc fees are not that bad. Have you checked on that? A Rubi is only a few thousand more than a Sport S if you limit yourself to the same options on both.

I agree, the $10k price difference mentioned above is probably a base sport vs base Rubi, but when you option the Sport to match the Rubi as much as you can, then it's not near $10k

I'm seeing a Sport for 31.5k vs similar Rubi for 41.5 after MSRP discounts

That doesn't look right. Can you post the configuration you are looking at? Maybe we can help price it.
