Hey all,
My "Kill 3-Honk" feature wasn't working properly, so I emailed Tazer's tech support about it. Upon Z-Automotive's advice earlier today I updated the firmware from 11.4.5 to 11.4.6 Before I could check to see if that cleared the 3-honk issue, my Jeep is now throwing four DTC codes, and I cannot clear them. Well, I can try to clear them but they don't clear. "Clear all DTCs", select, then do a full reboot, wait for the timer to countdown to zero, shut off the ignition, open the door, get out, wait about 3 or 4 minutes, get back in, ignition to run, ignition to OFF, get out, wait 3-4 minutes, get in, ignition to run, ignition off, get out, wait another 3-4 minutes get in and start the Jeep. Same codes come back. I have gone through this multiple times. I have a long off-grid road trip coming up next week and I don't know if I trust the Jeep's computer at this point. Have I caused irreparable damage to either the Tazer or the Jeep?

Codes:
PCM: U0168
BCM: U1514-87
DASM: C2225-00 and P 0100-00.

What in heaven's name did I do wrong here? I'm really afraid I fried Something Very Expensive with the Tazer and I'm in a serious panic with this trip coming up.

I am of no help to you, but this is exactly why I have not ordered one.
I keep reading about issues other people are having with there Tazer and it makes me want to keep my distance.

I've run a Tazer in my WK2 for 4 years without issue, and for the last 5 weeks in my JL. It was only after upgrading the firmware that this happened. I generally never upgrade firmware without a seriously good reason, and I should have probably listened to my gut and just lived with the 3-honk problems.

The first 2 codes are from unplugging the SGW. The other 2 codes are likely being caused by that as well. After a little time and cycling they should clear.

Try this. Unmarry the Tazer, full reboot, then perform 2 full sleep cycles. I suggest when doing so, exiting the vehicle and walking away for a few minutes each time:

  1. Open the door
  2. Exit the vehicle
  3. Close door
  4. Make sure the dash goes dark then walk away
  5. Come back to vehicle, open door, set ignition to on, let everything turn on
  6. Turn ignition off
  7. Open door, exit vehicle, close door and make sure dash goes dark
Then download the last working version of the Tazer firmware you had (11.4.5), grab the Tazer and load that firmware version. Go back to the vehicle, marry the Tazer, make your changes, do a full reboot and perform another 2 full sleep cycles. See if you have any codes.

No luck. Something's been damaged permanently, I think. i don't know what to do now. Have I just trashed my Jeep's computer??!!??

Steps that I performed:
  1. Get in, turn the ignition on
  2. Clear All DTCs
  3. Unmarry (countdown completed)
  4. Full Reboot? Yes,
  5. Wait while it counts down for 180 seconds
  6. Turn ignition off and get out of the Jeep
  7. Wait for the screen turn dark
  8. Leave it for 5-8 minutes
  9. Come back, open the door, get in, close the door
  10. Ignition to "on"
  11. All lights come on (CEL is flashing and a few dings present)
  12. Ignition off
  13. Exit the Jeep
  14. Wait for the dash to go dark and leave it for another 5-8 minutes.
  15. Open the door
Part two:
  1. Disconnect both cables and remove the Tazer JL from the Jeep
  2. Reflash to 11.4.5 firmware
  3. Open the door, reconnect it to the Jeep
  4. Ignition to ON
  5. Marry (countdown complete)
  6. Full Reboot? Yes, wait for the 3' countdown,
  7. Ignition off
  8. Get out and wait for the screen to go dark, leave for 10 minutes
  9. Get in, ignition on
  10. CEL flashes, chime dings, then CEL stays on stead.
  11. Ignition off, get out and wait.
  12. Get back in, start the engine, CEL still on.
  13. Clear all DTCs? Yes.
  14. Full Reboot? Yes, repeat steps 21-28 two more times.
This isn't normal. Now what?

I don't know what J Scan is. I'm not a mechanic or a vehicle electrician. This stuff scares the crap out of me.

Take a deep breath. The Tazer doesn't "fry" anything. You aren't sending high voltage into the system via the Tazer.

The Tazer (as I understand it) is simply sending different information to your system than the predetermined data set from Jeep.

Slow down, go through the process fully and methodically.

If you must, go to AutoZone and buy a code reader, that will clear your codes.

Hope that helps.

What are the codes you are getting? Is it possible your battery is getting run down and giving you additional fits now?

Same four codes as in the original post. The battery is just fine (about 18,000 miles and I've been driving it a lot the last couple of days).

Does the vehicle start and drive normally? No CEL? If yes to both, then give it some time and the codes will clear. The codes are likely from disconnecting the SGW as I indicated above.

The vehicle starts and drives, but the CEL remains on and will not turn off. I'm going on a short camping and 'wheeling trip to Hancock, NY this weekend and I'll see if it turns off at some point along the way, but I'm not particularly hopeful given the last 12 hours of trying every combination of things I can think of.

Take it to an AutoZone, Advance Auto, Pep Boys, etc. and have them clear the codes and see what happens.

I'd unmarry the Tazer for now also.

I don't relish driving 5000 miles or more without auto stop/start disabled, at the very least. I love the functionality Tazer delivers, but I wish I knew what happened, and whether it will happen again if I can arrange to swap it with a new unit.

Auto start /stop is not that big of deal. Just push the button when you get in. Don't let that ruin your trip.
