Labor negotiations going on with UAW with Stellantis expected to counter soon.

" The union's demands include a 20% immediate wage increase followed by four 5% annual wage hikes, defined-benefit pensions for all workers, 32-hour work weeks and additional cost of living hikes "

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/gm-offers-10-wage-hike-160645052.html

After materials, labor is a manufacturer's biggest expense. Stellantis (or any automaker) isn't going to eat that kind of cost increase so undoubtedly will get passed down to the consumer, but i'm sure we'll get "JeEp iS jUsT gReEdY"

Sorry, I can’t feel sorry for Stellantis when it keeps posting one record profit after another, and continues to treat its customers like shit.

they ain't getting that.

maybe 5% raise, 2% yearly and no pension. no one is doing pensions now-a-days. they expect you to have a 401k.

i smell a strike.

I can't fathom telling my employer give me a 20% raise right now and then 5% and really expecting to have a job. Sure fire way to get automated out of a job - and seriously ballsy with AI coming online, human manufacturing days are numbered.

That said, car prices are already absurd and this just makes them worse. The consumer is screwed here.

And that's why we have Unions.

If your corporate overlords are making (record) profits off your back, you as a worker deserve more. I fully support the UAW.

What skills did these workers add that would require adjusted salaries? Just because a company makes a profit doesn’t dictate a worker by default should get more. That is why burger flippers make 16 an hour now. If they want more when the company does better, that is called profit sharing. I hope this is the last time we have to hear about a United Auto Workers union.

And it is funny how much people complain about quality on this forum but then are pro UAW, those are the people inspecting and building the product.

The article states GM (i think) already offered 10% increase and the union called it "insulting"

Later this month i start a new job (same company) where i got a 20% increase, but it's a higher level position with more responsibility and higher work load, while those guys want a 20% raise to work 32 hours a week doing a crappy job.

Look forward to AI and more automation in the car industry for sure.

Don't feel sorry for Stellantis. Feel sorry for consumers, because we are the ones who will be paying for it with higher prices.

I can see it for Dodge Ram and Alfa, they rounded out the top 3 in initial quality for 2023 by a large margin, which is huge for public perception, but Jeep and Chrysler are way behind with vehicles well into their production cycle. I can see the Wagoneer dragging them down being new, but it's a low production flagship vehicle. They should be going over them with a fine tooth comb.

I work in the auto manufacturing industry and hear it in the meetings all the time. Labor is one of the biggest costs associated with it and the one that is the easiest to cut down on. If you're going to get a 20% raise, expect them to try and reduce headcount by 25% by means of automation. A robot cell pays for itself in a few years. Fastening and welding equipment is repeatable and its performance is easily tracked. Quality inspections through vision systems are getting better and better by the day. They don't need paid days vacation, insurance, and 401k matching/pensions.

The only way you can get away with high labor costs is with premium products that are perceived by the public as something that is worth paying more for. At which point you end up in a chicken and the egg situation. Do you pay the production associates more for their work and hope that their work comes up to the pay standard or do you make incentives for quality of work through bonuses and pay raises?

Fain is going live this afternoon at 4PM CDT if anyone is interested in hearing the latest news from the horses mouth. Stellantis is supposed to be delivering an offer today as well so maybe he'll address that - probably with a trash can again the way he's been going.

Adjusting for inflation, workers today are making $10 per hour less than in 2007. At the very least I think automaker should adjust wages to account for inflation increases since then and to promise raises to match inflation in the years to come.

On the flip-side, I do agree that increasing the labor costs will encourage more automation. Especially with recent breakthroughs in being able to use machine learning to program cheaper robotic arms. Computer vision allows the arms to do more intricate work and removes the restriction of static, repetitive motions and opens the door to more dynamic operations.

For better or worse, that's always how progression happens. It's not clean, and there's never a perfect solution, but we try to make the best in the meantime.

How can anyone support these ridiculous Union Demands? A 32-hour work week but get paid for 40, 40% raise, c'mon man! When they are replaced by robots or the factory moves to another country, they have no to blame but themselves.
Car manufacturing, like airlines is very cyclical, you make money for a while then you lose money for a while. When they lose money, the union isn't offering a pay cut. It takes tremendous capitol to research and develop new cars, if there aren't big profits, there are no jobs.
By the way, the union organizers are flying around in private jets. They are the only ones who get rich from a union.
People need to be reasonable in their expectations.
