@Elysian Highlands, it shouldn't matter, but make sure the rpm have dropped. I know the manual says rolling, but I've found it's only at 0 - 1 mph (converting that to metric is maybe $100???).

@Elysian Highlands,

Jennie,

Yes you're going way too fast. The shift into or out of 4L should be barely moving. I want to reiterate 'barely'. Just the slightest movement at all, is all that is needed.

Just the distance to get the teeth to align with the cogs. Slower the better.

Dead stopped is much harder to shift because if the teeth don't align, no matter how hard you pull on the lever it may not be enough force to move the mechanics into position.

Recall, it is possible to engage 4L when fully stopped (stuck) but this then requires taking the transmission out of Neutral. The engine, even at idle produces enough torque to grind the gears.

So you're doing nothing wrong except trying to shift while going to fast. Slow way down to where you are barely just moving. 1/2 kph may be too much. It doesn't take much. A slight incline, transmission Neutral, foot off the brake is more than sufficient.

If you are on a perfectly flat road, drive slow, down to a few kph, transmission Neutral, coast almost to a stop then shift into 4L. The key is just enough drive shaft rotation to find the sweet spot where the gear alignment occurs.

With practice this will become so easy you'll wonder why it was ever difficult. And remember if it won't shift or it's grinding your doing something wrong. Shifting into or out of 4L should be smooth, silent and fun when done properly. Don't get frustrated.

Slooowww is the magic ingredient.

Hope this helps.
Good luck, happy 4 wheeling.

Jay

You do NOT have to be moving to shift into 4L, it’s easier for some rigs, but it’s not a necessity…. We’re in 4L almost every weekend for 5 years now, I can almost use voice command, ? mine works the best at a stop and in N…… like butta….;)
I agree

4H need a slight roll. 4L stopped and Trans in N works best for me.

I did it Jay!! ?

Slight roll, popped it into N then 4L it was tough but I did it. Popped the main shifter into D and gave it a bit of gas, but the car didn’t move and D was flashing on the main shifter. Put the main shifter back in N and popped it back into 2H, tried again, and this time it did drive a bit in 4L and it was easier the second time. Might try it a few more times just to get the hang of it.

Thanks for all your help!

Yes, I too sometimes get the flashing "D". I believe the transmission controller gets confused when shifting into gear without your foot on the brake. All this automation certainly can be finicky.

Once in 4L, hit the brakes, come to a full stop and shift into Drive. You're ready to rock-n-roll from there.

The exact same as well in the other direction back to 4H. The secret sauce again is slooowww.

Have fun. You've got this.

Cheers,
Jay

Very first time I shifted into 4L took some effort, but now it's easy. I think that's normal.

Jennie,

Anytime moving between high and low gears, yes it's safe to come to a complete stop after shifting the transfer case. The transmission software seems to like it when you put it in drive with the brake applied.
