Transmission Noise

I have a loud, high pitched, whiny transmission noise. It changes as the transmission shifts. It seems to diminish or disappear at higher speeds but road noise could be drowning it out. I checked the fluid (at proper temp with vehicle running) and it appears to be at the proper level. I test drove when new with windows down and radio off and heard nothing of concern. I’m at 6K miles now.. Anyone experience something similar?
