Retired HD diesel technician opinion here…. Avoid the EcoDiesel unless you have exact detail on the maintenance history. I’ve owned two and both were bought back (failed HPFP on both) so I’m a bit jaded. Some will say they’re bulletproof but your mileage may vary.

I currently own a 2025 Rubicon with the 4 banger and it’s been flawless.
The HPFP is a recall item on the ecodiesel at least on a 2021. Mine was replaced last week at the dealership on an open recall ticket. Luckily, I've had no issues so far other than one self-induced. I'm still a little freaked out never having had a diesel before and what "could" go wrong. The mileage is great though!

Definitely not the vehicle to get if you make lots of short trips though.

I love how many people say avoid the Diesel in these threads; keep that demand low so I can snatch up a few more for cheap please.

3.6 - Most popular simply because most people didn't realize there are other options. 60%-70% chance that it will spit a camshaft around the 75k mile mark.

4xe - Great for starting bonfires randomly

Diesel - It's not for everyone. If the driver is not mechanically inclined and not willing to do a little additional work to keep it running than skip it.

4 banger turbo - Sounds like a sewing machine and occasionally you'll have to wake up the mouse to spin the wheel. But IMO is the best option for a pavement princess, could be decent offroad too in the right driver's hands.

Guessing the 392 just isn't an option?

99% of ecodiesels will have the fuel pump grenade (since we are pulling BS numbers out of our asses despite the fact the internet exists). In reality 1-3% of the 3.6L are experiencing cam failures, but 60-70% sounds good. The 2.0t sounds like a sewing machine, the 3.6L sounds like a larger sewing machine, and the diesel sounds like a yard tractor. None of them sound good (aside from the 392).

If we couldn’t wring our hands over the tiny percentages and blow them out of proportion so we could claim the sky is falling there would be no need for most of the threads on this forum.

The fuel pump on the Eco was under recall and replaced sooo by your internet verified math 99% are still on the road. Haven’t seen a recall for the cam on the 3.6 yet, weird.

So far from the bickering in here the 2.0 only sounds like a lawnmower and the rest all have catastrophic problems ..... imagine being so fragile that the sound of your jeep keeps you from buying the one that doesnt fail

I still don't know how anyone is pulling 26mpg. If you hypermile the thing and/or do a lot of cruising at 50mph maybe. Even when ours was stock we never saw more than 21-22mpg. Most of our daily driving is either country highways with frequent stop signs. 0-65-0-65 is not good for fuel economy. On roadtrips out west the cruise control is set at 80-85 for hours. Even worse for fuel economy. After the lift and 38s it was more like 17mpg average. Sometimes more like 15 if there was a heavy headwind. Yours will get better once broken in, but don't hold your breath for mid 20s. I'll bet low 20s is where it settles. Of course the 3.6L in the newer JLUR on 39s only returns 12-13mpg so the 2.0t still has the advantage when pushed hard too.
Highest I’ve seen in my 2.0 is 24 and I was being nice to it. On my wheeling trip last weekend I got about 22 up to the trail and back. But I hover around the 20-21 area for my daily commute even with some traffic mixed in.

Well, not all, according to the forum techs the most reliable is by far the best sounding. But there is a disadvantage.
Jeep Wrangler JL Tough buying decision IMG_2269

Actually 14-16 hwy speed dependent, about 11 town, but a playful foot gets this result quickly.

Well, hemi tick possibility diminished with MDS disable, but top oiling MDS lifters remain. I’ve heard the balance failure referenced but seen none reported here, the percentage of failures ?

Unfortunately, non MDS lifters require a non MDS cam. Too expensive for a Ca resident who cannot upgrade the cam and tune at the same time.
Someone did a manual transmission SRT cam and Hellcat lifters with the stock tune and reported good results. So if needed it’ll suffice.
