My stock tires are 285/70/17. I was going to ask for suggestions on alternative sizes for winter tires as the only winter tire (not mtn. snowflake) in stock size (per tire rack) is the Cooper Discoverer Snow Claw Studable (which doesn't have stellar reviews and is load range E). I was thinking of using the stock rims. So, instead of asking, I decided to do some research and thought to share.
Tire Size dot com shows sizes similar to stock including the likely wheel widths. I stuck with 17" diameter rims. The only winter tires I could find (using tire rack) in the "similars" was in 255/75 -- Blizzaks (success!) and F'stone Winterforce -- BUT, the wheel width required turns out to be 7" (vs. the 7.5" stock wheel).
275/70 had no winters, but did have snowflakes - AT4W being the only one with a C load rating.
255/80 had no winters and all others were load E.
Going up to 285/75 gets you the AT4W.
I may be SOL for my preference: using stock rims, true winter tire, load range C, not Snowclaw. I may have to compromise on something! (Snowclaw is simplest solution, but there were some pretty reviews on tire rack -- not making me comfortable.)
Edit: current tires are the stock Falken WP MTs -- not snowflake.
