A different thread pitch would lead to cylinder head replacement. What’s so hard for some to understand about the plug socket being a different size? Maybe this was done on purpose?
Just follow the instructions, it’s not that hard.
My nephews 2008 Camry has 249,000 on it. 3.5 V6, never had a cam cover off, just oil and other fluid changes. This car is not babied either, some newer tech doesn’t automatically equate in to unreliability down the road.

How so? Flesh that one out for us, please.

I don't disagree with the "follow the instructions" vibe. My experienced-based concern here stems from having to pay for avoidable mistakes (sometimes, sheer negligence) by Svc Dept employees when the dealership refused to assume responsibility. If I'm taking a broad view here, it's because not everyone is capable of following simple instructions at all times or in all places.

If you try and thread the wrong plug that’s made with a steel hex into an aluminum head you’re probably gonna bugger the threads. With the different size required socket you might not even be able to get it started. And repairing the head with helicoils on a boosted engine would not be a very good option.

I think it’s cool to see innovation. We’ll see here soon enough how reliable it is. I am sure it will be on more platforms than the higher grand Cherokee trims in the near future.

I get what everyone is saying about simple this and simple that and ‘I never had a problem with a ‘xxx’ engine and it has 4 million miles on it’. I personally want a more powerful and more reliable motor that is more efficient.

If you had two grand Cherokees sitting side by side, one with the pentastar and the other with this hurricane 4, what would you do? I am sure some people would pick the pentastar, but I would go ahead and pull the trigger on the new 4 and have the extra power.

If you had three wranglers sitting side by side, one with the pentastar, one with the current 2.0 and one with the new 2.0 what would you pick? I am sure most of us would take the new motor.

If those were the only options, none of the above for me. Both the GC & Wrangler have lower tech 392’s with respectable power. I willingly spring for the extra gas.

Well then Joe shouldn’t mess with it.
The point I was making is when you introduce something like this that can and will be screwed up it'll happen to people. Spark plugs are considered routine maintenance, and this is something that can and will be messed up by ignorant mechanics.

I'll just be happy if they can keep this new 2.0 from sounding like a farm tractor when cold like the old one, people used to ask me if my 2020 2.0 was broken from day 1 and eventually I went back to the 3.6. It was reliable and fun though.

8 spark plugs, two different types, and if you stick them in the wrong hole it destroys the engine

😍
Yeah, I honestly have a tepid response to this. I’m sure this has at least some Tavares fingerprints on it by proxy. Cool but maybe “poof.”

They’re going the wrong way! Makes you money though! 😄

My son’s 98 low tech, low power for size 318 Dakota was starting to burn a little oil and struggled to pass the smog test at only 328,000 mi. ….. the unreliable POS. I’m sure the new complex, high tech, high boost engines will be more reliable and last much longer, ya think ?
Loved my 99 Dakota RT. Only issue I had owning it was the coil would go out every year or so. Started keeping one in the glove box. Solid Truck!

I kinda liked that antique engine sounding characteristic in mine. Not broken so I didn’t care what others thought.

The trans failed at 328K, it sat around for a couple years because he intended to restore it. Gave up and sold as is. Nice SC SB lowered black truck. But you don’t just replace the trans at 328K, and the interior was shot, but the body was in good shape.

Exactly what is not needed in a low speed utility vehicle. It's frankly mind-boggling how out of touch they are.

What used to be routine maintenance has gotten kinda complicated depending on the vehicle in question.
So many times you get what you pay for.
If you trust a garage with questionable staff then maybe it’s time you re think it.
Do we go back to points, carburetors and valves that need periodic adjustments?
Now, more than ever you should educate yourself on the task before attempting it. Cars will not get any simpler anytime soon.
