This threw me and I thought you were posting from the future. 🤣

Looks like you had a great time. Any signs of bears in the back country? I had originally planned to camp at one of the back country campgrounds but seeing how remote they were I didn't want to run into a bear alone.
Thanks for catching that! That’s really the 4th time I’ve done that this week

No black bears. But every campsite I stayed at had a bear box.

Went to Big Bend 03/14-17/2025 on a solo trip. I met some great people along the way. I saw some beautiful scenery and got to hit a great deal of BBNP, before they close the Chisos campground area.

Friday I rolled out at 330 AM and was at the park entrance at around noon time. I arrived at Panther Junction and asked the park rangers for any possible camping spots for Saturday night as I had nowhere to stay. I lucked out and got a spot at Camp Chilicotal, and this spot proved to be one of my absolute favorite times out there. I headed out to the Hot Springs then to see the Boquillas Canyon and Rio Grande overlooks. Friday night camped in my jeep st Rio Grande Village.

Saturday morning headed to Boquillas MX and had a great guide through the town. Found a Catholic Church, saw the locals first hand (amazing to survive with minimal amenities in such a remote place), rode a donkey, had lunch at Boquillas restaurant (amazing food with some tequila and cheaper than Falcon’s), and had a tequila shot at the bar. Once I crossed back over around 1 pm, I hit River Road East to make my way to Black Gap Road then up to my camping spot at Camp Chilicotal. This whole drive took me 6 hours. Desolate, alone (ran into maybe 4 vehicles), and took in the awesome scenery. Camp Chilicotal really was in the middle of nowhere. This place was perfect and again slept in my jeep. I must have seen 2 other cars the whole evening. Stargazing was unbelievable.

Sunday, hit the road by 4 am to make it to the Lost Mine trailhead. Hiked it to make the sunrise view. Absolutely stunning. Then made my way to Balanced Rock followed by Window Trail. I camped that evening in my jeep at Chisos campground, made my first official meal to include a ribeye, cactus with Oaxaca cheese, and diced potatoes.

Monday I headed up to Santa Elena Canyon, took pictures and headed out thru Old Mavericks road to hit Terelingua for fuel and lunch (Panther Junction was out of fuel.). I had lunch at High Sierra then hit the road home for a 9.5 hour drive.

I can’t say enough things about this place. I hope to make it back again one day. It was sort of a last minute trip as I really wanted to do the Chisos campground area trails due to their upcoming 2 year closure. I hit everything on my bucket list for this trip and more.

thanks to @shane h. @SadRobot and @ObiMatt87 for their input on Shane’s BB trip report thread.

Fantastic recap and great pics. Ironic you should post this today, as I literally was telling a couple of my employees this morning about my Big Bend trip back in November of 2021 (Cannot believe it has already been that long ago...), how much I loved every minute of it, and how I'm so ready to go back down there again. One of the most amazing national parks out there. Told them they have got to put it on their list and just go. The vistas, the sunrises/sunsets, the amazing variety of plants/cacti, the trails, the massive variety in terrain/appearance depending on what part of the park you were in, the hot springs, the hikes, the fun locals, and the really good food and drinks at the Starlight. Our group was fortunate enough to see black bears while hiking to The Window. A mama and two cubs. Fortunately, they were on the other side of the creek on the hillside across from us and all stayed where they were, but we definitely kept our eyes open. Just an amazing place.

anyone interested in doing a Katemcy 2 trip this Saturday for Memorial Day weekend? I’m thinking of driving up Friday afternoon or early Saturday morning to wheel Saturday.

Dang! Normally I would have loved to go out there with you, but we'll be working moving things out of my in-laws' home this weekend. Have a great time. One of these days we'll get out there to Katemcy. Still haven't been.

Hmm, I don't have any wheeling planned for July yet...

Which day specifically are you going to be there? I could be available the 19th or the 20th, but definitely not the 18th.

If you haven't wheeled with him already, @ParadigmDawg is a resource you'll want to have! Just be aware, if he says he's going to take it easy, don't believe him!
I plan to wheel a full day Saturday only. It’s a day drive Friday and day drive home Sunday.

I already told a couple of guys in the jeep group I’m going with that I won’t be putting around. A few of us plan to do the ā€œharderā€ jeep stuff. I ain’t skeered.

also you can ask @Chocolate Thunder how we wheel.

Saturday works for me. I'm definitely not afraid of a hard trail. What size tires and lift does most of your crew roll with? (Just so I know what I'm getting myself into)

Will @Chocolate Thunder be there?

I've always wanted to meet that guy. Especially after he came back from the dead!;)
Wait, what?

37-40s. I’m on 38s. To be honest, I’ve never personally wheeled with this group. I’m hoping my buddy on 37s ends up being able to make it out there. Him and I have wheeled a lot together. We like to wheel Wolf Caves. Wheeled most of Texas together as well as Colorado, Utah, and the Rubicon.

I really need to fix my Jeep. I haven't been back to Wolf Caves since I was stock.

I take it back, I just realized last night that the 21st is my anniversary, and then the 23rd is my wife's birthday. So not going to be able to make it after all. 😄 😭
I found you a new Joey gif.

Planning to head to Bridgeport July 18-20 with a local Jeep group if anyone wants to tag along.
Can you drop a reminder a little closer to time? : ) I have the memory of a goldfish...
