I didn't realize there are so many Texans on here. Let's all figure out the best way to communicate and meet up for rides. My Wife and I both purchased Jeeps within the last 3 months and are relatively new to Offroading. We are addicted to the sport and try to go out as much as possible. We have been to Bridgeport 5 times, Barnwell 1 time, Hidden Falls 1 time and are planning a trip there right after Christmas, and we have done Crossbar 1 time but I am going sometime this week if I can find someone to go with.

Most of our offroading over the past 14 months was in the Ouachitas; mostly very mild stuff and we were always in my TRX. I would love to meet people who have experience that I could learn from but I also don't mind having mellow days with newer Jeepers.

My Wife has a 2024 Rubicon X and I have a 2023 392. Both are pretty stock on 35s but mine will be getting a 3.5 Teraflex lift and going to 37s before too long.

We are in Benbrook which is the far West part of Fort Worth.

@72Blazer & @BDinTX steering setups on the JLs are pretty convoluted between models based on my understanding.

The 392 steering gear doesn't seem to wander as much as the other JL steering gears, but the pump overheats pretty quickly due to the weight and heat of the engine. The Apex kit did improve the steering power of the 392, especially with the front locker engaged, but it did not prevent the electric pump from overheating. The apex fluid cooler does help with the fluid temperatures, but it does not prevent the electric pump from being overworked.

I believe I read somewhere that the diesel JL has a liquid-cooled steering pump. If true, that would help explain why @BDinTX has never seen the same issues the 392 was having.

My new-to-me 2020 wanders more than the 392 and I believe the primary difference is the steering gearbox.

I'm about halfway finished with installing a full ram assist PSC system into the 2020 3.6L, so we'll have another data point soon if it helps as much on the road as some others have stated. At 9-10psi on 37s, my wife would struggle to turn the wheel in a few situations with the 2020, so I'm putting this upgrade on my Jeep "for her"! ;)

I have the electric pump removed, the belt-driven pump installed and am working on removing the stock steering gearbox now. I'm hoping to be finished up this coming weekend.

I didn't realize you are from Weatherford. My wife grew up there and we are in Benbrook now. I know where I am heading when I need help now...lol...

I will do that but it will be my wife's FB account and I will announce who I am. We joined North Texas Jeep Club but they seem more like a Billy Bob's drinking club.

Check out lone star jeep club on Facebook. Monthly wheeling trips and you don't have to be a member to wheel with them.

I agree about the forum. New website just started and I am still not sure it is any better.
www.lsjc.org to be able to at least see upcoming events.

You have the most capable 4x4 coming straight from an assembly line. You have a real rock crawler. I don’t understand. Also there’s plenty of wheeling with us to back off a trail. I’ve done it to avoid costing me a taillight. Might do a search for Texas overlanding groups…maybe that’s more of what you’re looking for.

I just signed up on the new site and it is totally dead so far.

Anyone want to show me around Crossbar Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday of this week on moderate trails?

No sir, I have been doing 1-3 rated trails up until last Saturday where I included some 4s. Like I said, we are pretty new and my wife is very new to off-roading but we have zero interest in Overlanding.

So far, when we go, I seem to turn into the leader and I don't feel like I know lines well enough to do more than I am already doing without having more experienced people with me which is what I am tying to find.

I just can't hang with people on 40s that don't care about body damage. Believe me, I put my TRX through the wringer and since we haven't even made the first payments, we don't want to scratch them to death...yet...

I am fine with some cosmetic damage but she is trying to be a little more careful as she learns. The pinstripe pictures are from my TRX and the wheel and bumper is my Jeep from Saturday. The Jeep damage doesn't bother me at all but I am trying to avoid the TRX damage.

In case you misunderstood, we are looking for people like you that could help us.

I care about body damage. All in the main group I wheel Jeeps with care about not getting it. If I don’t care about body damage I’ll take my full blown crawler out. We are shooting for a February trip to WolfCaves or K2 if you’d like to join.

I sure can try. I am hoping to hit Crossbar this week and we are going to Hidden Falls right after Christmas. If you have time to meet us at Bridgeport and help teach us, that would be awesome too.

I suggest joining San Antonio Jeep Exclusive. While based out of San Antonio, they have a lot of club runs in the Llano and Austin area. Plus their club runs are split into about 3 groups, easy, hard, and extreme. Plus they have trail guides for each group, like a Jeep Jamboree. While the membership is $30 a year (you get a tshirt), I think it’s worth it. Great group!

I’m not sure if it’s a formal SAJE club event, but there is a run at Still Water Ranch the weekend of December 16th. I believe they’ll have trail guides. I’ve been quite a few times. And always had fun, even though I’ve always done the easy group. I haven’t decided if I’m going then, or maybe the January run.

There’s a reason I haven’t been to Bridgeport. That’s 9+ hours one way. But the RockCrawler guys do frequent it. Be good to reach out there to the local guys. Good group of guys to wheel with.
