Working on a trackbar brace install and long story short I thoroughly stripped out one of the gear box threads. The bolt doesn't even grab - just spins and can be worked out without turning. (Yes this was stupid - lack of patience and a heavy finger on the impact.)

So anyone have any tricks of the trade that can salvage the gear box? I think if the bolt isn't even grabbing a tap would be worthless. Otherwise I think I'm down to replacing the box which is an expensive lesson to learn.

You could always tap it out to the next larger size and replace the bolt.

I got a used steering box from Highway Auto Parts (Detroit) for 25.00 plus 25.00 shipping. If I had an option between a helicoil and replacing the box for almost the same money, and for safety reasons, I would replace the box.

The helicoil will be at least as strong as the original.
