Hi everyone just a quick question. Because as always the dealership won't give me just a straight answer. My stop/start system went out. Not an issue as far as me wanting it working. I hate the thing like most of us do. 90% of the time I push the button to turn it off if I remember. Anyways I have registration coming up. Not sure if they will ask for a smog check. It's a 2020 so far no smog check but I feel one coming soon. Will the system being down cause any issues with passing a smog check? I hate to assume not because you can get the system delete wiring but I don't want to assume anything. Thanks.

You'd have to look at your local laws to see what's being tested, but I can't imagine that being part of it. It requires lots of stars being aligned for it to work.

Note, however, that it going out could be a symptom of other things going on. E.g. batteries going out, bad IBS, etc.

Ok thanks, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it or just coincidence. But maybe 4 hours before it went out and the service light went on I had the main battery changed.

That doesn't sound like a coincidence.

Do you have an aux battery?

Have you pulled codes?

Not that I have installed. I know the stop/start system has its own battery. Like you said it could be several things from the little research I've done from a blown fuse to a complete system failure. I haven't pulled any codes yet. It just happened. The stealership here wants to charge me $350 just to show up. Ridiculous.

Some Wranglers have dedicated batteries for it and some don't. Most are a pain in the ass to replace while others (i.e. diesels) are fairly simple. Many here simply disable the aux battery. If you don't then you need to replace both. They die together.

I'm not sure what service light you're talking about, but take it to a local auto parts store and have them pull codes.

Less than one month ago, my Jeep had PA's two annual inspections: Safety, and Emissions. It passed both. Coincidentally, prior to making the appt., I asked one of the Service Writers I know, who used to be an inspection technician, if a non-functioning or malfunctioning ESS system would affect the vehicle's ability to pass either inspection. He replied in the negative, saying that ESS isn't explicitly a safety or emissions feature or fitment.

You might consider making the same inquiry with the inspection authority/dealer that you plan to use. 👍

Ok will do. It's the actual stop/start service light that came on. I forgot to turn it off. Came to a stop the system came on engine stopped as normal then the jeep stalled. Light came on.

More information about your Jeep would be helpful, year, engine and transmission. Also if the battery has been changed you need to check if the readyness tests are complete because that will cause an emissions failure.

Hey Greg yeah sorry 2020 wrangler sport jl 3.6 L V6. In the 2 weeks prior to the stop/start failure the jeep failed to start 2 times. So I had the battery changed problem solved bad battery. Then 4 hours later the stop/start failed at a stop. So yeah I understand it can be a hood latch button to a blown fuse to a complete system failure. I'm just trying to arm myself with as much info as possible before taking it in. Also like I stated if it will cause any issues with a smog check.

Ok, your Jeep has two batteries and they should be changed at the same time or they will cause the problems you are having. The auxiliary battery needs to be changed or better yet, deleted. Here is a link to the thread with instructions on deleting the auxiliary battery

Link

Short version is disconnect the cables to the auxiliary battery and pull fuse #42 and never have that problem again.

I don’t know of a single state that tries to measure emissions at the tail pipe with the engine off (including California) .

Because their concern is focused on what engine produces while running, the tester doesn’t want ESS to activate…..

I have my start/stop disabled and it passed california smog a few months ago. The smog guy said it's not part of the emission system so no problem.
